A trio of birthdaysby Kirthi Sri Karunaratne
A dinner with music for dancing at the Trans Asia Hotel brought together many friends and relations when Mohan Tissanayagam celebrated his birthday. It was a night of fun and frolic and dancing went on in to the early hours of the morning. Even though it was a party for the celebration of a mans birthday, the women brought the glamour and dazzle to the occasion.
Saris dominated the scene, with Mohans wife Ruki setting the pace. Her saree of shot silk in a luminous shade of lilac was bordered in a woven subdued silver, with little motifs scattered on the body of the saree. A simple blouse in the shot shade, and beautiful jewellery in pearls, with shoulder length kudu earrings finished the elegant picture.
Striking colours of grey bordered in a deeper elephant grey, black, gold, and cerise made the saree Goolbhai Gunasekera wore outstanding. Her blouse in the lighter grey had below the elbow sleeves, and her accessories were in the orchid tone. A collar necklace in gold, with large stud earrings were the perfect complement to the ensemble.
A grey silk with a deeper grey pattern in honeycomb checks woven in it, was the choice of Mano Caderamanpulle. Subtle colour in pink was featured in the pallu, and she wore a necklace of several strands of grey pearls.
Indhu Selvaratnam had her saree of blue in a lovely shade of sparkling turquoise embroidered in cut work on net on the borders and the pallu, to wear with a blue blouse and a collar necklace of cabochen turquoise and gold with matching eardrops for youthful charm and sophistication.
Tahire Illangakoon had her unusual kaftan top and trousers in black. The long top was embroidered in Kashmiri style in coral and dull gold at the neckline and down the front, with a U neckline on the over coat embroidered to match. A single strand necklace of corals and earstuds in corals were the finishing touches. Many lovely outfits were worn by those present, styles were worthy of making fashion news.
A kaleidoscope of styles
Half a hundred women sat down to a sumptuous high tea at the Colombo Hilton lobby when Sarala Nagendra celebrated her birthday, supported by her husband Segar. The women provided a kaleidoscope of styles which added lustre to the event. Sarees, Salwars and western clothes competed with each other for elegance which ranged from the traditional to the modern.
Sarala for the occasion wore a saree in blue silk, richly woven with a border and pallu in ivory silk thread, and amber. Her jewellery consisted of a pendent in blue sapphires and diamonds on a single strand of pearls, and earstuds in sapphires and diamonds. The silk had shot into it hues of purple for added distinction.
A lovely turquoise net salwar embroidered in thread was the choice of Shobana Nagendra. The embroidery was in a deeper hue, and made a fresh and charming impact.
She wore pearls for jewellery and carried a beaded bag.
The salwar kameez Bala perera wore in a pale blue shade had the dupatta appliqued in fused mauves and blue, for perfect tea time wear, Gayathri Swaminathan had an insert in a vandyke at the neck of her brown dress in a cafe aulait, for stylish sophistication. The blending of colour was most pleasing.
Kshirahdhi Aruliah, the petite and pretty daughter of the hostess, opted for a salwar kameez in ivory embroidered in an allover design in muted gold. She played down on the jewellery for this late afternoon celebration.
Renuka Dhossa had her tunic style two piece in a shade of slate grey in a fabric which looked like a soft swede. The tailored style was buttoned down the front, and had two pockets at the top.
Her mother Mallika de Mel contrasted her saree of a pale red and gold striped woven silk, bordered in black and pale gold with a black blouse, and black accessories.
Simple but trendy was the three piece outfit Anusha Piyatissa wore. Black pants were teamed with a smoky blue top and a long sleeved cardigan style jacket in the same colour. Her jewellery was simple and unobtrusive and her accessories were in black.
A layered top painted in floral sprays made the outfit Sheranee Sellamuttu wore most becoming and couturier fashion.
A pleasant change
Another birthday celebration was also held at the same venue, when Shuamalee Tudawe asked her friends and family to tea in the lobby of the Hilton Hotel. It was a pleasant and friendly evening, with many new faces we dont run into at the round of parties, providing a pleasant change.
Vivacious Shyamalee for the evening wore a silver grey saree of soft charmuese in the Gujarati drape, the edge of the fall fringed in silver shot grey bugle beads. An exquisite border of silver guipure lace edged the fall of the saree, and the same lace made a vandyke in front on the blouse, which was sleeveless. A little pendent of a diamond and eardrops to match were the pretty ornaments to enhance a designer ensemble.
Lalini Alwis opted for a blue silk tanchoi saree daintily woven in an allover design for her Kandyan style. The blouse of the shot blue had a border at the edge. A necklace of amethyst and black accessories were the finishing touches.
The red salwar Vajira Perera wore was embroidered at the V neckline of the kameez and down the front in white silk thread and pearls. The work edged the three quarter sleeve, and little specks of white embroidery were scattered on the fabric. Her salwar was in white, and the dupatta in the simple red.

Very favourable for SagittariansTwo planetary changes, Sun into Aquarius and Venus into Capricorn are scheduled to take place today.
Aquarius, an airy house which belonged to Saturn though an evil house for Sun, the effects will be generally good as number of new welfare schemes are due to come. But, the position will not be favourable for certain public high officials.
The house occupied by Venus, Capricorn also is belonging to Saturn the common mans shelter. Accordingly, responsibility of Venus is to make influence in a favourable manner on human being particularly on the poor than the rich. Therefore, by these two planetary changes people will enjoy comfortable life during the period ahead.
With regard to political movements there will be noteworthy incidents during the next few weeks. A series of political clashes among those who are struggling for power could be witnessed.
The sluggish economy gradually will show considerable progress with certain new proposals while the business sector too will be activated. However, health problems are likely due to epidemic diseases that could spread by unbearable heaty environment and unusual weather conditions.
The two changes, however will affect individuals in a different manner. The position will be very favourable for Arians with career success and various types of gains.
Taurians too will have good effects in career with gains of wealth. Those who are planning to go abroad will be able to achieve success if they take due interest in this regard.
Geminians can not expect the position to be favourable for them. Instead disappointments and frustration as they will have to undergo a difficult time. Position will be the same for those born in Cancer and Leo too as they suffer due to ill-health, financial problems and family problems.
Favourable effects are indicated to those born in Virgo, hostile acts disappearing. Further they will be able to achieve success in their undertakings with help and assistance of close relatives and faithful persons.
Neutral results to Librians and Scorpians but at times they will assume an angry mood having disputes with associates.
Very favourable for Sagittarians as their career position and financial sector is being improved. Their efforts in any work will be successful.
Although, Capricornians suffer due to heavy losses they will remain happy and contented.
However, the position appears to be adverse to Aquarius and Pisces. They will have unrest and remain unhappy due to ailments in head or neck and mental pain.- Sugathadasa Jayasekera
