The "New Lalith Front"
led by Mrs. Srimani Athulath-mudali had decided
that the party would contest the forthcoming
Provincial Council Elections under the UNP
banner, a spokesman for the Front said yesterday. In the absence of Mrs. Athulathmudali
who is away with a Parliamentary delegation to
Amsterdam and South Africa, MP Ravi Karunanayake
said that their members had been advised to
obtain dual membership of UNP as they were to
contest under the UNP banner. This dual
membership was still under discussion by their
"Politburo", he said.
Asked whether it would be
unconstitutional for them to run under the UNP
while being a constituent partner of the PA,
Karunanayake said. "We need not worry since
it is not unconstitutional. What does it matter
even if it is?"

| COLOMBO,
May 15 The son of Brigadier Larry
Wijeratne stands beside the coffin at his
home in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo.
Wijeratne was killed when a suspected
Tamil Tiger rebel suicide bomber jumped
onto his vehicle and detonated explosives
at Point Pedro in northern Jaffna
peninsula on Thursday. Wijeratne's
killing comes a day after the leader of
the Tamil Tiger guerrilla group warned of
more fierce fighting as the Sri Lankan
government's bloodiest campaign against
the rebels entered its second year.
