Consolation awards come Air Women's way
by Shirajiv Sirimana

May 30 - The Air Force Women's volleyball team which were forced to eat humble pie at the 10th Asian Women's Volleyball Club Championships by being placed last, had some consolation when certain individual awards came their way.

National player Kumari Wanniararchchi was adjudged the third best 'Blocker' of the contest. She had a total of 134 attempts and had succeeded in 98. Playing in 15 sets she had scored 6 points at a success rate of 4.48%. L. Lavrova of Kazakstan was the best blocker scoring 13 points from 18 sets at a success race of 6.57%. M. Marina of Uzbekistan after 20 sets of success rate of 4.51% scoring 11 points was second. Being placed as the third best setter in a event competed by the top six Asian spiking giants is a highly creditable achievement for Kumari.

Mangalika Wasanthi too earned a rare personal honour when she found herself in the fifth position of attackers, with a success rate of 23.67%. Mangalika who too was in superb form throughout the tournament had attributed to score 7 points from a total of 51 team points. Out of a total of 165 attempts she had success in 97. K. Olga of UZB was the number one spiker scoring a total of 35 points at 46.06%. Taipei (33.61%) Thailand (32.92%) and two other Taipei (30%) players were above Mangalika.

Lankan skipper Nayana Jayaratne who played her heart out in the tournament was ranked 9th best setter with 23.82% success rate. Out of a total of 340 attacks her success was 250 and she had only 9 faults which is very creditable, for all her hard work.

Dinali Jayasinghe who played in 14 sets sometimes as a reserve along with Nilu Undugoda (2 sets) were adjudged as the sixth and 8th best receivers in the contest. Undugoda who was in the court only in the last match over Vietnam had a good match even earning two points from her services in the first set. Much more of her ability could have been seen if she was included for the earlier games.

Skipper Nayana said the tour earned them tremendous international experience which could never be dreamt in Sri Lanka. Due to a heavy local match calendar we did not have a long training period. "That upset our team work", she said. "Our receiving is low but we improved on our services", she added.

Peterites beat Antonians: 8/5
By Jatila Karawita

An excellent second half rally from St. Peter's enabled them to score a close 8 points (1 try, 1 penalty) to 5 (1 try) win over St. Anthony's, Katugastota in their inter-school rugby fixture at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

At half time Anthonians led 5/3.

The Katugastota lads against all odds opened scoring in only the third minute of the match when their blind-side flanker Isuru Herath touched down off a forwards rush which ensued from a 10 metre scrum in St. Peter's territory. However, Herath's try went unconverted for them to surge to a 5-0 lead.

Just before the short whistle Peterites reduced the deficit thanks to a penalty converted by Mohammed Mustaq.

During the second half a fierce battle took place with both sides matching each other man to man, and with no quarter being asked nor given.

And in the dying moments of the game the match winning try for the hosts was scored by left winner Sohantha Wijewickrema who made a scything run through the backline having collected a neat pass from his right wing Gavin Ludowyke to plant a deserving try for the winners.

The try went unconverted for the Petes to sail home by a narrow margin.

Referee - Shamrath Fernando.
