Niroshan - a nine wicket haul - Mahela Man of
the match Sri Lanka's spin twins Niroshan Bandaratilleke and Muttiah Muralitharan made short work of New Zealanders with a lethal performance last morning which hastened the visitors to an innings and 16 run defeat in the second cricket test at Galle International Stadium, squaring the three match series, one all. New Zealand who resumed their second innings on the fifth morning at 94 for 5, requiring just 36 to avoid an innings defeat, were bowled out within 43 minutes when they lost the remaining five wickets to the addition of mere 20 runs. Both Bandaratilleke and Muralitharan picked up two wickets each in the morning to send New Zealand crashing to 114 all out. Left arm spinner Bandaratilleke initiated New Zealand's final slump in the third ball of the final day having Chris Cairns caught by Hashan Tillekeratne at short leg, before any addition to the total. Muralitharan then accounted for allrounder Chris Harris three overs later, Daniel Vettori was run out another ten balls later while Bandaratilleke dismissed Paul Wiseman another five balls later. Kiwis who were sliding towards defeat at an unbelievably rapid rate met their ultimate fate another six overs later when Muralitharan accounted for last man Shayne O'Connor at 11.43, one hour and 15 minutes before lunch. This historic victory at Galle International Cricket Stadium's maiden test is Sri Lanka's 12th win in 85 test matches and it is the third against New Zealand and first by an innings over Kiwis. Bandaratilleke's magnificent bowling earned him final second innings figures of 24-8-36-5 to give him a rich match haul of 9 for 83 in only his second test appearance. Off spinner Muralitharan, considered to be Sri Lanka's main strike bowler who went wicketless in the first innings had the consolation of claiming 3 for 24 in 16 overs in the second innings. However it was Mahela Jayawardena, the only batsman from either side to have mastered spin on the difficult Galle track of uneven bounce and big turn who was adjudged man of the match for his epic innings of 167. New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming paid a glowing tribute to the youngster after the match. 'The number three batsman made the difference between the sides. His innings ultimately won the match for them', Fleming said. The 21-year-old Jayawardena in only his fourth test scored more than 50 percent of the Sri Lankan total on a track which Fleming described as an 'otherwise 200 to 250 run wicket.' CR in smashing 46-11 win over Petersons CR and FC recorded a smashing 46-11 victory over Petersons in an 'A' division inter-club first round league fixture played at Longden Place yesterday. The "Red Shirts" simply outplayed the visitors in all departments, and went on a try orgy despite several of their regulars. The winners collected their points through five goals, one try and two penalties and led 25-6 at half time. Full back Nalaka Weerakkody once again showed his accuracy in the kicking department contributing sixteen out of the teams total points. The former Kingswoodian put the hosts 3-0 ahead with an easy twenty metre penalty early in the first half, and then made it 6-0 with his second which was fired from a distance of thirty metres. Weerakkody later took the initiative to get the team fired up with the first try, when he sent winger M.J.Mushtaq over the line following a neat pass in the opposition thirty. Weerakody goaled the try from under the posts. CR scored twice more during the first half through number eight Nalin Wijegunawardane and lock William Leo who ended up under the posts after running a good thirty five metres unchallenged. One try was goaled by Weerakkody who took the score to twenty five against Petersons six which was made up of two penalties converted by Colin Denish. Centre Paul Benette streched CR's lead further with the try number four when he collected a chip kick executed by fly half Sajith Mallikarachchi and fell in close to the posts. Fijian man mountain Manasa Qoro made the score 32-11 with a try for Petersons mid way in the second half. CR crossed the opponents line twice more, first through Tulaga Tawita and Mallikarachchi who scored following his own up and under. Weerakkody goaled both tries. first Trials Four new Sri Lanka records were established at the first Athletic trials to select the national pool which began at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. The biggest surprise came from the 28 year old P. K. Aluvihare, when he threw in the Javelin 73.62 mtrs. The former record holder who was in isolation for nearly two years was involved in cricket. Coached by Ranjith Aluvihare who was down with an arm injury had only three months practice before the event. Aluvihare joined navy four months ago, a father of two said his aim is to get into the Olympic Pool. "I felt that I had more athletics in me so I made a come back," he quipped. The former record of 65.50 meters was set up by A. P. Nishantha in 1996. Harijan Ratnayake the 400 m. hurdle runner from Badulla accounted for the second Sri Lanka mark when he clocked 51.10 seconds. A soldier who had been maintaining a successful rhythm for the past two years said that if tough competition was there I could have come with a better timing. I am confident that I can run the distance in less than 50 seconds this year. Twenty two year old Harijan is coached by S. M. G. Bandara. Ruwan Pradeep Perera also from the Sri Lanka Army as expected improved on his own javelin Sri Lanka record which he was doing for the past three years. Sujeeva Nilmini was the fourth record breaker of the day lowering the 5000 metres mark again, running in 17 minutes 00.2 seconds, yesterday. Sponsored by Trico Maritime she bettered her own mark of 17 minutes 12.9 seconds. Jayamini Ileperuma showed signs of maturity when she reached the qualifying mark in the 800 m. finishing in 2 m. 10.27 seconds. Tamara Saman Deepika the hot favourite for the sprints in the absence of Susanthika Jayasinghe was given a shock by up and coming Pradeepa Herath (24.43 sec.) who put her to second place (24.52 sec.) in 200m. final. Nayanthi Kumari too passed the qualifying mark in the long jump with a leap of 6.16 metres to enter the Asian Games Pool. The trials will be concluded today. JAVELIN THROW (Men) 1. P. K.
