The
historic Victoria bridge over the Kelani
river which is over 100 years old is to
be dismantled and moved to join the
Ratmalana and Piliyandala towns over the
Veras river. The bridge will be repaired
and reassembled for this purpose.
Meanwhile a new bridge will be
constructed with Japanese aid over the
Kelani river. This bridge will be on the
exact location of the old Victoria bridge
parellel to the Japan-Sri Lanka
friendship bridge. The foundation stone
will be laid for the new bridge by
Minister of Transport and Highways A. H.
M. Fowzie on June 28. Picture shows
workers completing the required
measurements prior to dismantling the
ancient bridge which had been around for
over a century. (Pic by Srilal Gomes)
