Tendulkar chosen Cricketer of Year NEW DELHI: India's master batsman Sachin Tendulkar, 25, has been voted Cooper and Lybrand's International Cricketer of the Year, the company announced yesterday. The panel's decision was backed by a survey conducted by CricInfo, the world's largest cricket site on the Internet where 40 per cent of 5000 people voted for the Indian. South Africa paceman Allan Donald was second with 13 per cent of the vote, followed by Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva (11 per cent) and Shaun Pollock of South Africa and Steve Waugh of Australia (nine per cent each). Tendulkar, who made his international debut at 16 in 1989, has scored 4552 runs in 61 Tests at an average of 54.86 with 16 centuries. He also has 16 centuries in 193 one dayers. Suspension lifted The Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AAA) has decided to lift the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka Veteran Athletic Association with immediate effect. This decision was taken after an inquiry was conducted by the AAA, headed by chairman disciplinary committee N. A. T.. Jayasinghe. Following is the letter from AAA Secretary Rohan Amarasinghe to SLVAA Secretary K. Sachithananda. This refers to the inquiry conducted on the alleged unconstitutional matters related to your Association. The Chairman, Disciplinary Committee forwarded a report in this regard and the General Committee decided on the undernoted action to be implemented for the smooth running of your Association. 1. The Secretary who was elected at the last AGM to remain in this position and allowed to carry out his duties in conformity with the requirements of the Constitution. 2. Your Association should be fully aware that any correspondence related to foreign tours and invitations to foreign teams should be channelled through the Parent Body, the AAA of Sri Lanka. Proper approval should always be sought giving details of participants with a firm view that selections made will not be detrimental to the progress of your Association. 3. The General Committee has decided to lift the temporary suspension imposed on your Association on 06th May, 1998 subject to adhering fully to the above conditions. Principal, Royal College. The Second Annual Over 35 Masters Soccer Tournament conducted by Mercantile Football Association was concluded recently at the City League Grounds Slave Island. Air Lanka Catering Services won the coveted Trophy defeating Hatton National Bank. 1-0. Airport and Aviation Services clinched the bowl while Air Lanka bagged the Plate respectively.
