Sri Lanka 'A' 196 ; South Africa 168/2 - Allan
Dawson captures 6/44 Sri Lanka 'A' resuming from their overnight score of 181 for 8 were dismissed for 196 to which the South African 'A' team made a bold reply scoring 168 for 2 at the close of the second day's play in the second unofficial test match played at Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala yesterday. Two experienced South African test players H. D. Ackerman and Herchelle Gibbs batted brilliantly to build their innings adding a remarkable unbeaten 151 alliance for the third wicket. Earlier, Allan Dawson the South African paceman finished with spectacular figures claiming 6 for 44 doing most of the damage to put Sri Lanka 'A' batsmen restricted to moderate scores. Sri Lanka 'A' overnight batsmen Tilan Samaraweera and Indika Gallage resumed the innings but a fiercy spell from Dawson saw Gallage dismissed for 10 caught by Jaarseveld when the score reached 194. Samaraweera added 5 runs to his overnight score to remain unbeaten on 26. Last man in Malinga Bandara too fell victim to a Dawson snorter to be held by Ackerman for 2 runs and the innings ended at 196. South African bowlers required only 8.2 overs to wrap up the tail enders with Allan Dawson finishing with remarkable bowling analysis 23.2-10-44-6. South Africa 'A' openers Mark Bruyns and Achwell Prince came to the middle to face Sri Lanka 'A' pacemen Chaminda Vaas and Indika Gallage. The pace duo bowled an accurate line to curb the batsmen and put them on the defensive. Gallage getting much life from the pitch dismissed both openers in quick succession. First to depart was Mark Bruyns who was trapped leg before wicket when the score reached only 7 with the batsman making all the runs. Soon after Gallage bowling with much accuracy clean bowled the other opener Achwell Prince for 5 as the South Africans reached 17 runs for 2 wickets. With these two quick dismissals before lunch brought much life into the match and the new batsmen in H. D. Ackerman and Herchelle Gibbs took the score up to 32 by lunch time. Chaminda Vaas returning to international cricket after undergoing knee surgery bowled with his old fire and gave Gallage much encouragement giving away only 14 runs in his earlier spell of 5 overs. Soon after lunch both experienced Ackerman and Gibbs settled down magnificently playing some elegant strokes throughout the afternoon session building their fallen innings with some watchful cricket. Both Ackerman and Gibbs putting on a partnership of 151 for the third wicket remained unbeaten at the close with Ackerman on 63 and Gibbs on 79. Ackerman batted cautiously while Gibbs was more aggressive hammering two mighty sixes off spinner Tilan Samaraweera in his bright knock. Gibbs also lifted another six off Malinda Warnapura soon after. Ackerman who is unbeaten on 63 had seven boundaries while Gibbs had seven boundaries and three sixes while entertaining the crowd to some superb batting efforts. During their batting episode at one stage both Gibbs and Ackerman protested to skipper Sajith Fernando and Dilshan the keeper after Chaminda Vaas bowled a few beamers at them. Ackerman faced 135 deliveries to reach his half century while Gibbs completed his on a faster rate getting it off 86 deliveries. Indika Gallage was the only successful bowler finishing with 2 for 31 while Chaminda Vaas bowled a steady length giving away only 25 runs in his 13 overs. Leg spinner Malinga Bandara did not impress giving away 34 runs in his nine over spell. Play was curtailed from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m due to rain and the game ended at 5.55 p.m. with about 30 overs to spare. SCOREBOARD SRI LANKA 'A' First Innings 181 for eight wickets contd. thrash Petersons: 27/10 Armys pint sized T. D. Silva turned his boots into a devastating weapon in an evening where a sparse gathering were entertained to an arrow sharp kicking exhibition ,as the soldiers pulled off a resounding 27-10 victory over Petersons in an inter-club second round league fixture played at Longden Place yesterday. The full back had all eyes focused on him as he kicked right five penalties and a conversion and also gave his team valuable territorial advantage when ever he chose to send the ball to touch. The highly charged Army ruggerites showed all the willingness to run the ball which at times overshadowed their fellow team mates from Fiji. However their star player Taniela Kunarara took the entire first half to settle down as he was constantly reprimanded by referee Steave savage for rough play. It was Petersons who got the first points on the board through a penalty try ten minutes in to the game when their forwards were deliberately deprived of advancing off a maul in the opposition five. Lumbini school boy Sham Pradeep goaled the try with ease. An unconverted try by winger R. Tikiribanda boosted Armys confidence as the winners punched the first hole in the Peterson defence nine minutes later. Tikiribanda sped away on the left flank untouched as he took the ball over the line following a superb break from mid field by fly half Ajith Peiris. Silva then took on the brunt of work as he added six points with two penalties to give his team a slender one point (11-10) lead at half time. Petersons Pradeep kicked over a penalty in the first half. Army crossed the Petersons goal line again in the fifth minute after the resumption, when Kapila Knowlton fell over close to the posts after recovering well from a tackle. Silva who goaled the try added three more penalties to swell the score with the final two kicks coming within the space of eight minutes . Attapattu 114, Mahela 79, Kalu 72 n.o. Sri Lanka were 352 for 6 wickets at lunch on the third day in their four day match against Middlesex at Lords. Batsmen out were, Hashan Tillekeratne for 11 and Mahela Jayawardane for 79. Jayawardane hit 10 fours in his 79. He faced 142 balls in 206 minutes. Romesh Kaluwitharana hammered a quick fire half century and he was unbeaten on 72 at lunch. He scored his half century in 52 balls and hammered 11 fours. He took 50 minutes over his knock. Jayawardane and Kaluwitharana put on a partnership of 97 runs for the sixth wicket in 27 overs. Chandika Hathurusinghe was unbeaten on 12 at lunch.
