    No nuclear bombs here but...
One cannot imagine how nuclear weapons are made and tested and stored with national pride after Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Pictures document the horrendous nuclear holocaust, survivors recount their horrible experiences, yet nations make and stock nuclear weapons to deter others' first strike, and these others make their own to protect themselves.
In the wrong hands: a mentally aberated leader directing the finger on the button, we could all be blown to kingdom come. If we are unlucky enough to survive, we'll burn forever till merciful death takes us. We'll wander around scarred, bald and blind wondering what we could eat, what we could drink, what we could breathe.
  • Our unprotected artists and the law
We have many laws in our statute books including that much vaunted law on Intellectual Property, not to mention the Copyright law. Arising from them, the question could be asked whether these laws especially the law concerning Intellectual Property is being enforced.

In this country there are a whole array of playwrights, dramatists, singers and writers whose works have virtually become public property.

Take the songs sung by some of our renowned artistes which are freely played not only over radio and TV, but even sung by anybody on TV and radio without an acknowledgement to the man or woman to whom the songs belong.

  • Sri Lanka's famous crime busters
There are many guidelines for a reporter. Perhaps, the most important thing is to establish a proper relationship based on trust, goodwill and mutual respect, with the right contacts. Which takes me back to my reporting days of the '60s and '70s when I hoofed the crime beat for the 'Observer'. It was my good fortune to have personally known and worked with some of the finest officers who have adorned the country's police of yesteryear.
  • St. John's College, Jaffna commemoration of the 175th anniversary
Some reflections on St. John's College, Jaffna
St. John's College, Jaffna, one of Sri Lanka's illustrious schools, celebrates the 175th anniversary of its founding this year. My acquaintance with this school is limited to brief visits in the seventies and to noting year after year that St. John's always ranked among best performers at the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination.

In order to obtain an objective index of performance of schools at public examinations, a school examination performance index was devised by the Department of Examinations in 1986, when I was Commissioner. The commonly used means of gauging school performance by the number of 4 A's and 8 D's at the GCE (A/L) and GCE (O/L) examinations is misleading as it may hide more valid aspects of performance such as the number of 4F's and 8F's.
