Golden Jubilee Tourney The Karnatake Bridge team won the finals of the Golden Jubilee Quadrangular Tournament when they beat Sri Lanka recently in Colombo. Trailing by a huge margin of 35 IMPs in the first set of 16 boards, Karnataka clawed their way back in the second set reducing the lead down to 20 IMPs. Karnataka, true to form, always seem to be sluggish in the morning (too much partying???) but as the day progresses they start pressing the pedal harder and harder. In the final session they quietly slipped into fourth gear. As has been the case with Tamil Nadu they start with a bang and fade away into a whimper, the reverse of Karnataka. The dog-fight for IMPs went right down to the wire and when the smoke cleared, it was Karnataka ahead by a nose. Just. A five mere IMP's! Karnataka also had a major success bagging the Friendship Pairs event as well. Ram Mohan Kini and S. Gopalakrishnan won this event. The Tamil Nadu ladies team had a superlative performance right through the tournament, never letting off from the word go. What a cake walk! They just breezed through like a hot knife through butter. Never even a whiff of a challenge, they started the day with a lead of over half a ton worth of IMPs to sit like brides. The second set saw them add another 7 IMPs to obtain an unassailable lead of 59 IMPs. The final set was a nothing even-steven. Tamil Nadu were the champs. Never a doubt about it. Over two score years ago, the last time a team from across the Palk Straits crossed over to lock horns with the hosts from this lovely paradise of Serendib it was for the Maneckavelu Trophy between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. The tournament, for whatever reasons, faded away. Today, we have gathered here all over again, to revive that lovely feeling of interaction between lands of the southern peninsula of the sub-continent. 'Times change, and in keeping with the change, we have broadened our horizons, which in this case translates as broadening the field of competition. From just Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, today we have incorporated two more states from southern India, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh. This being their maiden foray, we extend them special welcome,' said Bandula Senaweera, President Bridge Federation. Using the occasion of her golden jubilee of independence, Sri Lanka has taken the initiative to host this inaugural quadrangular. The hospitality and facilities offered by them will be hard to match in their excellence. A kind of challenge to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. I'm sure they will pick up the gauntlet and make this quadrangular a permanent and progressively better tournament. 'It has been decided to make this quadrangular an annual feature, with the hosts being rotated cyclically. What makes this tournament stand apart from any other tournament? It's the spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood, and the hospitality. The facilities of lodging and boarding, etc. are all complimentary of the host state', said Senaweera. Inter-District cricket tourney to develop junior talent The National Development Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket has decided to organise the Inter-District Under-15 tournament within the respective regions. . Regional Boards are entrusted with organising the first round matches to be played in the respective regions. After completion of the tournaments, the regional teams will be selected by the regional selectors appointed by National Development Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. This is on a concept of BCCSL President, Thilanga Sumathipala. The selection of the regional teams will be purely based on the performance of the players at the Inter-District Tournament. The objective of conducting this tournament is to harness the talents and to give them the required training under qualified regional coaches appointed by the National Development Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. It is the decision of the committee to stage all inter regional matches on turf pitches to provide an opportunity for young cricketers to play on such conditions. We feel that this gesture will benefit the cricketers to improve their talents as well as expose their playing ability on turf pitches. Areas identified for the purpose are Kandy, Colombo, Kurunegala, Galle and Badulla. The expenses will be born by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka. Modality of the Tournament |
