| Left seeks to have common
Presidential candidate The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has invited political parties other than SLFP and UNP to discuss the possibility of fielding a common presidential candidate at the next poll. JVP spokesman and central committee member Wimal Weerawansa yesterday told 'The Sunday Island' that they expected political parties to respond within the next few days. ''We have invited both LSSP and CP for discussions,'' he said claiming that people were most likely to support a common candidate against PA and UNP candidates. Asked whether LSSP has received an invitation from the JVP, party secretary and cabinet minister Batty Weerakoon replied in the negative. ''We did not receive any letter from them,'' he said. Weerawansa said that People's Alliance government broke their pledge to abolish presidency on or before July 15, 1995. ''Now they are talking about another presidential poll,'' he said adding that both SLFP and UNP were only interested in power. (SF) |
