| People and Events "September Shades" The Colombo Branch of the Past Pupils Association of Uduvil Girls' College has organised a Coffee Morning with a difference in aid of the school, as it approaches its 175th anniversary. The event titled "September Shades", will be held on September 12, 1998, at the Empire Ballroom of the Mount Lavinia Hotel between 9.00 a.m. 1.00 p.m. Highlights of the morning will be a Fashion Show, Raffle Draws, Prizes and many more exciting events. Artistes at the show will be Faizal Bongso as compere, Ronnie Leitch, Sithy Omar and the the band, Zodiac. Uduvil Girls' College, founded by American missionaries in the year 1824, is the first Boarding School for Girls to be established in South Asia. Congressman visits Sri Lanka Congressman Scott L. Klug (Republican party), who represents the Madison, Wisconsim, district, will be in Sri Lanka August 25 and 26 on an orientation visit. Congressman Klug has a special interest in business development and privatization programs. In this regard he will visit the Colombo Stock Exchange and a tea plantation near Kandy. Felicitating Naleem Hajiar The Alumni Association of Jamiah Naleemiah, a premier Muslim education institute in Sri Lanka has organised a ceremony, to honour its founder and the life President Al Haj MIM Naleem, to be held on 6th September 1998 at 3 p.m. at Jamiah Naleemiah, Beruwela. Seminar on East Asia economic crisis A seminar on the East Asian Economic crisis and its impact on the Sri Lankan economy will be held on Friday September 4, at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi from 8.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. targeted for top executives in the private sector, industry and commerce and heads of public sector organisations. It is organised by the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries. Speakers will be Governor of the Central Bank A. S. Jayawardena, Prof. A. D. V. de S. Indraratne, President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, and Director of the Development Finance Corporation Maxi Prelis. The seminar is being held to gain an insight into the current status and future prospects of the economic crisis, its impact on commerce, industry and employment and the need to upgrade the business structure and diversify the export market. Panellists are President of the Federation of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry Patrick Amerasinghe, Nivard A. Cabraal of Renuka Hotels and Dr. Bandula Perera, Managing Director of Ceylon Glass Co. Ltd. Radio drama awards The Award Ceremony of the Radio Drama Script Writing Competition on 'Peace and Ethnic Harmony' 1998 organized by the National Integration Programme Unit in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will be held on September 4, at 2.30 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. Minister of Justice, Constitutional Affairs, Ethnic Affairs and National Integration, Prof. G. L. Peiris and the Minister of Posts, Telecommunication and Media Mangala Samaraweera will give away the awards. Anna Weiss The British Council, in keeping with its tradition of presenting dramas relating to topical affairs, has come up with Mike Cullen's Anna Weiss, with Ranmali Mirchandani, Nimmi Harasgama and Rohan Ponniah, directed by Steve de la Zilva. It will be staged at the Bishop's College Auditorium from August 27 to 31 at 7.30 p.m. each night, with a special show for students on Sunday. Anna Weiss is an explosive play about the phenomenon of false memory syndrome, and prompts intense speculation on our need for faith in each other. Its language is strong and explicit and more suited to adults. Ranmali Mirchandani, Cultural Officer of the British Council is quite a veteran on the stage, as is also Rohan Ponniah who has returned to Sri Lanka after a long stint abroad. Nimmi Harasgama has had wide experience in stage plays in the United Kingdom and is currently a producer and presenter at Young Asia Television. |
