Thilina and Deepika win titles Thilina Piyadasa of Vidyartha College and Deepika Rodrigo of Lake House SC emerged champions in the inaugural Aquarius Beach Club Open Table Tennis Championships for the Jens Baurish Memorial Trophy concluded at Mt. Lavinia yesterday. Top seed Piyadasa scored a thrilling five set win over bottom seed Indika Prasad in the men's final while Rodrigo, the number one woman player who is also the National Champion defeated experienced Namal Gunasekera in three straight sets to clinch the women's title. The most exciting game was the men's final which lasted nearly for one hour with both Indika and Thilina producing top class table tennis. Indika won the first two sets 21-10, 21-19, but determined Thilina who played to his full experience fought back strongly to win the final three sets 21-13, 21-11, 21-16. This was the last domestic tournament for Indika Prasad who will leave for Germany next Sunday for a one year contract period to play for Willstad TT Club. Samantha Jayadeva who was not selected for next Asian Championship in Japan created a major upset defeating Dilmini Direckz who was also a member of the Asian Championship team to tour Japan at the end of this month. For the first time in TT history, disabled soldiers participated in this tournament for four events. Lal Jayasinghe won the wheel chair event. Brigadier Dr. Dudley Perera, Director of Army Rehabilitation was the chief guest and gave away the awards. Asian German Sports Exchange Programme sponsored this tournament and all the trophies were donated by Germany's Baurish family to commemorate their late son. to Japan The Sri Lanka Junior Women's Basketball team led by Nilusha Dilrukshi will take wing to Tokushima, Japan on Wednesday to take part in the 14th ABC Junior Women's Championships commencing on September 13. The contingent of twelve players and five officials is slated in group 'A' along with giants China, Malaysia and Laos. They will play China in certain raiser on September 13. The team which was under training for almost five months is fully confident. It has three players who had donned the junior national vest earlier at the junior youth tournament way back in 1996. Hashini de Silva who is one of the experienced players will be the assistant of Nilusha. According to previous ratings Lankans were placed eleventh out of 13 teams.
