leaders at key chamber seminar The Exporters Association of Sri Lanka has organised a seminar on the impact of currency devaluation on the country's exports in Colombo on Sept. 17, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce said in a news release. The seminar which will also seek methods to improve Sri Lanka's export competitiveness will be addressed by three key business leaders, Rajan Yatawara, CEO of Haycarb, D. Gomes, chairman of the Garment Buying Offices Association and Mahesh Amalean, chairman of the Apparel Exporters Association. Industries Minister C.V. Gooneratne, Trade Minister Kingsley Wickramaratne and senior government and Central Bank officials will attend this seminar which will be held from 3 - 5 p.m. on Thursday at the chamber auditorium. In January this year the Exporters Association submitted a report to government on the impact of currency devaluation in South East Asia on Sri Lanka's exports. This was updated in April. Since then the Russian devaluation and a possible devaluation in China is causing great concern to the export trade, the chamber said. "So far with the exception of tea, a few agricultural products and garments, most of our exporters seem affected by the East Asian crisis. Also, with the exception of garments and textiles, our industrial exports have been experiencing negative growth for some time, the news release said. "The purpose of this seminar is to discuss ways and means of improving Sri Lanka's export competitiveness.'' Exporters intere-sted in attending this seminar were asked to contact the secretariat of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. |
