Sugath and Damayanthi medal hopes for Lanka

Sugath Tillekeratne and Damayanthi Dharsha running in the 400 meter semifinals at the 16th Commonwealth Games qualified to run in the finals. Sugath in lane 5 was placed second behind Mark Richardson. England who clocked 45.03 in the first semifinal. The second semifinal was won by Ewan Gwyn Thomas (Wales) clocking 44.61. He was followed by his compatriot James Banlach.

Sugath's timing of 49.09 secs in the semifinal has put him to the fourth slot among the finalists. The other three athletes above him are Mark Richardson (England) 45.03 Iwan Gwyn Thomas (Wales) (44.61) and James Bonlach (Wales) (44.83).

Sugath has been improving on his timing since his arrival to the athletic scene in 1993.

Here in Kuala Lumpur too he has shown tremendous improvement in all attempts in their event clocking 45.97, 45.55 and 45.09 respectively.

Sugath after his qualifying round said I had to work hard as this was the semifinal. I will have to face stiff opposition in the final from England and Wales athletes who have recorded better timings. This is the first occasion I confront this sort of stiff competition at an international meet said Sugath. I will use every bit of energy in the final to bring honour for my country.

Damayanthi Dharsha won the first semifinal for the women's 400 m with a time of 51-70 to push back Lee Naylor of Australia to second slot. Sandy Richards (Jamaica), (50.65 secs) and Donna Fraser (England) (50.85 secs) were the winners of the second semi.

Dharsha speaking after her victory said she ran this event with the sole intention of qualifying for the final. I will do every thing I have for the final said Dharsha.

According to overall standings Dharsha is positioned third. But she said there are three good athletes who are above me. I will definitely have to face a tough race in the final.

On an earlier international event Dharsha has clocked 51.29 which stands as her best achievement.


Lanka's cruise to 56-41 victory over Maccau

Sri Lanka women Junior Cagers participating at the 14th Asian Youth Basketball Championships registered the second victory beating Maccau 56-41 yesterday.

They have beaten Maccau on an earlier occasion in the same tournament. But have never won two matches in an international tournament played so far on foreign soil.

Maccau players managed to come to equal terms only on one occasion. The Sri Lanka cagers made sure that they keep control of the game right through. Hilomi Jayalath who was outstanding in the earlier game against Laos was very well marked by their opponents preventing her from scoring freely. Dilrukshi Heenatigala who made good use of situation helped in collecting points at will for Sri Lanka. First five minutes saw Lankan's take the lead to 12-2 and the following they further went ahead with a scoreline of 19-7.

Maccau players used all their tactics to put pressure on Hilomi Jayalath. The final outcome being Hilomi sent out of the courts in the second half for foul play. Sri Lanka took a 25-18 lead at the short whistle.

In the second half Maccau cagers fought back gallantly and came very close to equalling in the first five minutes, scoring 8 points against Lankans 4 points. In the next five minutes Lankans scored 3 points against Maccau's 5 points.

At this stage Nilochana and Premila took full control of the game to see Lanka take a firm lead 42-34. They held this grip and went on to the final whistle with a scoreline of 56-41 to seal victory for their side.

Sri Lankan coach speaking after the victory said this we achieved mainly because we played to a well set plan. We expected Maccau was ready to give us a good run in this game.


Eighteen FA Cup Fixtures

Eighteen more fixtures of the Bristol FA Cup conducted by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) will be kicked off this weekend.

Excluding the Soccer Fans vs St. Anne’s first round matches encounter at Price Park Colombo all the games are scheduled to be played out of Colombo.

It will be also note worthy to mention the fact that the FFSL President V. Manilal Fernando’s Club, Green Field SC Kalutara too will be in action this week. They will encounter Gold Star Beruwela at Dharga Town on Sunday.

Red Sun Gampola recorded the biggest victory margin of this years FA Cup so far, when they beat Fordyce Sports Club Hatton 4-1.

The keenly contested match in the competition was recorded when Serendib Mawanella edged out the highriding Sunrise Kandy by three goals to two.

The competition is lavishly sponsored for the sixth year in succession by Ceylon Tobacco Company Limited.

Bridge Fed pioneer V. P. A. Perera dead

V. P. A. Perera (Victor) one of the pioneers of the Sri Lanka Bridge Federation is no more. He passed away following brief illness on Wednesday.

Popularly known as VPA by his friends and associates, Perera served the Bridge Federation in almost every capacity. He was also of the former Ceylon Civil Service. Victor was in the late seventies at the time of his demise.

His only two children Viran and Nirmalal were fine cricketers for St. Joseph’s College, Colombo having played for the under-17 and First XI teams in the early eighties. Nirmalal in particular was an outstanding performer having made several good scores for his team. He also captained the First XI team with success.

Victor leaves his wife Felicia and two sons.

His funeral will be held at the General Cemetery Kanatte (R. C. Section) on September 19 (Saturday). The cortege will leave his residence 97, Castle Street,, Borella at 4.00 p.m. (R. L. F.)


A no-decision

The under 23 inter club cricket match between Kandy CC and Old Anandians SC ended in a no-decision at Ananda Mawatha due to bad weather with no play being possible on the first day. Kandy CC taking first lease made 238.

Skipper Sumedha Weerasiri made 128 with 16 hits to the fence.

Old Anandians, replied with 116 for 2 in 23 overs with Chathuranga making an unbeaten 60.


30-over league cricket tourney

The fifth Annual "Coca-Cola" Colombo City five-star hotels 30-overs league cricket tournament will be held from September 21 to 26 at Mercantile grounds.

Six five-star hotels, Hilton Colombo, Taj Samudra, Hotel Intercon, Lanka Oberoi, Galadari and hosts hotel Trans Asia will compete at this year's tournament.

The tournament will begin on September 21 and the matches will be played first on "Round Robin" basis.

The round robin matches will be played on September 21, 22 and 23 with two matches per day.

The first match will commence at 9 a.m. and the second match at 1.55 p.m. with 30 overs per side.

The semi-finals will be on September 24 and on 26 the final at MCA grounds.

The six teams are slated into two groups. Group 'A' consists of Hilton Colombo, Galadari and Ceylon Intercon while group 'B' comprises Trans Asia, Oberoi and Taj Samudra Hotel.

Hilton are the reigning champions and have won the tournament thrice in its five year history.

Man-of-the-match of all matches, from the round robin stage, Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Best Fielder and Batsman who hits the highest number of sixes will receive awards.

Cotta United-Old Joes clash tomorrow

The eagerly awaited Cotta United vs Old Joes Football Club soccer match will be played tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. at Angampitiya Municipal Council Grounds Kotte.

The first encounter ended in a draw and in the second year Cotta United lost to Old Joes in a penalty shoot out.

Old Joes are being sponsored by Shiran Garments Ltd.

The winners of this encounter will receive the Rohana Auto Villa Challenge Trophy. In addition to this, the best player and best goal keeper too will get a special award.

The trophies were donated by Mahes P. Perera, Deputy Mayor, Kotte MC.

Minister of Housing and Housing Development Nimal Siripala de Silva will be the Chief Guest, while Manilal Fernando, President, Football Federation will be the Guest of Honour.

TTSC Beach Rugby on Sept. 20

The inaugural Sea Beach Rugby Championship organised by Travel Trade Sports Club and sponsored by Jetwing Travels in association with Carlsberg will be held on September 19 at Royal Oceanic Hotel sea coast, Negombo commencing from 8 a.m. onwards.

Nineteen teams will scrum down at this years event slated in six groups. The tournament will be conducted on a league basis to teams of each group in the league will qualify to play in the knock-out tournament in second session.

Each team will consist of six players but, only four will play in a match with two players are stand-by. The full match will be of 9 minute duration each consisting four minutes and a one minute break.

The players can only touch and tackle. No kicking allowed in this except the kick off.

The organisers have decided to give away Trophies and certificates with special vouchers. The prize distribution follows the tournament.

The sponsors Jet Wing Travels have shown their willingness to make this an annual event to sponsor.

The Beach Rugby a concept involving beaches was first introduced last year in Sri Lanka by Chandrishan Perera with the assistance of 'Carlsberg' to safeguard the natural elements of the ocean to combine it with the man's skill.
