Straight sets victory for Korea Sri Lanka Junior Women spikers went down to a strong outfit from Korea 3-sets to nil in their third engagement at the 9th Asian Women's Junior Volleyball Championships on Thursday. Brig. Hapugalle Trophy Pizza Hut Invitation Schools Basketball Tournament for Brig. S. D. N. Hapugalle trophy 1998 will be conducted from September 30 upto October 5 when the finals of this tournament will be held. This tournament, which has been organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association will be staged for the seventh successive year. It was first mooted by Brig. Hapugalle who was one time Chairman of the Basketball Association. Mrs. Kumari Perera, Chairperson of the Schools Basketball Association addressing a press conference in this regard last Thursday, said that this tournament to be played on a semi-league basis, will have a total number of 24 schools from all over the country participating. She said that a special feature in this years tournament is the participation of a prestigious school from India, namely Doon School Deharadun New Delhi. Too see them taking part in this invitation Basketball tournament will be a great opportunity for not only the basketball playing students of Sri Lanka, but a rare treat for fans as well. The Chairperson of the schools Basketball Association said that when the children of international schools were suddenly deprived of the right of participation in sports competitions organised by the Ministry of Sports, Brig. Hapugalle who was her father immediately foresaw the necessity for International schools to organise tournaments. U-15 Rugby Champ Trinity College, Kandy won the Under 15 Rugby Championship while St. Anthonys College, Kandy and St. Josephs College, Colombo took away the Plate and the Bowl respectively at the recently concluded Inter-Schools Under 15 Rugby Championships held at Kandy. The matches were played at Bogambara grounds and Nittawela grounds produced quality rugby for a large spectator gathering present. The Cup final saw Trinity edge out Royal 12-10 points in a close finish. Trinity defeated Wesley and Royal beat Isipatana in the semis. Sports Festival M. G. Lilina Shanthi of Hambantota and K. D. A. S. Katulanda were adjudged as best atthletes of the 12th Annual National Youth Sports Festival conducted at the Mahaweli Stadium here last evening. Katulanda representing the Kegalle District became the automatic choice for the best athletes award for his record breaking feat in the short sprint. He ran home in 10.4 seconds and set up a new games record. Later the organisers reversed their decision stating that Katulanda's sprint was assisted by the wind. After a officials meeting again they declared it as a games record. In 1990 former Sri Lanka 100m record holder Sriyantha Dissanayake ran a 10.1 second dash at the National Sports Festival. This was first recognised as a new Sri Lanka record but was later declared null and void since it was found to be wind assisted. Lilina Shanthi was nominated best woman athlete for her breath taking 200 metres run. She finished her event in 26.8 seconds. Meanwhile Imalka Ranaweera accounted for the first meet record of the day when she leaped 1.60 metres in the High Jump event. However Imalka could not match her 1998 NationalSportsFestivalfourth place jump of 1.74 metres. The two day event saw four new records estiblished and a very high standard was witnessed throughout the sports festival. Meanwhile the Trincomalee District soccer team edged out Batticaloa 5-4 after a penalty, shoot out. The full 90 minutes produced a nil all result and the extra time failed to produce goals. Both teams which face hardships due to the North East war displayed good temprament in the final. R. Royal Jinson of Trincomalee was adjudged the best player of the final. Sports Minister S. B. Dissanayake and Deputy Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi were present at the closing ceremony as special invitees. Commonwealth Games medalists Sriyani Kulawansa and Sugath Tilakaratne too were present. Schools Invitation 6-a-side Cricket Tournament Nalanda College Colombo led admirably well by skipper Niranjan Kumara Mannikkage clinched the schools Six-a-Side Elephant, Lemonade trophy when they beat a gutsy Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa XI by a handsome 21 runs in the finals of the Old Wesleyites Sports Club, organised cricket tournament which ended at Campbell Park yesterday. The architect of this convincing win for Nalanda was that experienced cricketer Mevan Porage who turned in a superb all round performance to guide his team to this memorable triumph. Naland taking the first lease of the wicket made a challenging score of 70 for 3 in 5 overs with Porage sparking a dazzling 43 which included six sizzling fours as well as one towering six. He received good support from Pradeep Handigalle and Kelum Gangodawila who both made 10 runs each. The Wennappuwa lads faced with an asking rate of 14 runs per over ended up with only 49 for 3 with Terence Fernando chipping in with 16 and Shane Kurera who made 12 runs. Nalanda captain Niranjan Kumar Manikkage bowled best to bag 2 for 7. Nalanda with this win pocketed the Elephant Lemanade Trophy for the second time running in the history of this series whilst ironically the losers Joseph Vaz went onto win the runners up award also for the second time in this Six-a-Side tournament. At the end of the final Nalandas Mevan Porage was chosen as the Man of the Finals by adjudicator Chisty Mujahid of Pakistan. Earlier in the day Nalanda college got the better of De-Mazenod College Kandana in one of the semifinals whilst Jospeh Vaz dowuned St. Peters College to look their berth in the finals. And the 1997 schools six-a-side champs Prince of Wales college Moratuwa was knocked out in the quarter final stage by the Peterites who thus paved the way for the Nalandians to crown themselves as the 1998 champions at the Wesley College grounds last evening.
