The 39th Bandaranaike Commemoration was held at the Horagolla Samadhi, with the participation of Prime Minister Sirima Bandaranaike, her daughter Sunethra and grand son Vimukthi Kumaratunga yesterday morning.

Both President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Anura Bandaranaike are out of the country.

Other participants at the Commemoration were Ministers, PA MPs, Diplomat party supporters, officials and members of the public.

The Commemoration started around 8.40 a.m. with the sounding of hewisi. Pansil was administered to the crowd by Chief Incumbent of the Attanagalle Rajamaha Vihara Ven. Pannila Vipassi Thera.

A two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to the late Mr. Bandaranaike, the founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party which is the largest constituent political party of the ruling People's Alliance.

Members of the Bandaranaike's family including Prime Minister and Ministers and Parliamentarians paid floral tributes to the late leader.

Mrs. Bandaranaike also made an Atapirikara pooja to the Maha Sangha in memory of her late husband.

Sunethra Bandaranaike placed before the Samadhi wreaths on behalf of herself and Anura Bandaranaike who is out of the country.

The religious ceremonies concluded with an Anusasana by Most Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusala Dhamma Thera, Chief Sangha Nayaka of Colombo and Chilaw.

Anamaduwa: An unknown gunman killed the PA Chairman of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha in Puttalam district on Saturday night, police said.

The victim identified as K. M. Kingsley Sarath Hemachandra was gunned down around 11 pm close to his residence. He had been returning after a wedding when the gunman lurking in the shadows shot him and escaped. He died on the spot, police said.

No arrests have so far been made in this connection, according to police.

Investigations are continuing under the directions of SSP (Chilaw) Gamini Silva.
