National Schools Athletic Championships
Ananda — Musaeus win C’ships

The Sri Lankan youth sprint specialist Ranga Wimalawansa and long jumper of Galle Anoma Suriyarachchi were adjudged best athletes at the four day National Schools Athletic Championships which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Ranga, a school boy of St. Peters College Bambalapitiya was adjudged the best athlete for his record breaking 400 metre run of 47.8 seconds last Tuesday. Coached by Sunil Gunawardane Ranga’s blistering run also earned him the Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Trophy awarded for the most outstanding sportsmanship.

Southland Balika’s Anoma Suriyarachchi who equalled the under 19 long jump record was nominated the best Girls Athlete. Anoma cleared 5.38 metres to earn this rare honour. She also shared the Carlton Seneviratne Memorial Trophy awarded for the best jumper (7.06 metres) along with D. Dumida P. de Silva of Bandaranayake MV Veyangoda.

Chamini R. Fernando of St. Sebastians College Kandana who too had been showing a upward trend in the javelin event was adjudged as the best throver.

As expected Ananda College, Colombo Relay quartet dominated the Relay Championship while Sujatha BMV won the Girls events.

The fourth and final day saw three more new records established bringing the total number of new marks to 26.

Omar Ilham another talented sprinter from St. Peters College, Colombo ran a fine 10.8 second dash to equal the under 21, 100 m record. Ilham qualified to run in the Asian Junior Athletic Championship semi finals in India last year.

A. Ratnayake MV Menikhinna an outstation school with plenty of talent set up a new record in the Under 17 Girls 400 X 4 relay clocking 4 minutes 05.6 seconds.

P. A. Shamali Lakmini of Weeraketiya MMV who ran a 12.9 second short sprint, set up a new record in the under 19 age group.

The smooth flow of the games was some what tarnished, when the Under 19, 400 X 4 Relay was declared null and void. It was later found that the recorders had accidentaly subtracted 12 seconds off the timing of the Rahula MV Matara’s 3.32.0 seconds run.

The Western Province facing strong opposition from outstation schools managed to win the Presidents Trophy with 785 points. North Western (302) Central Province (285) Sabaragamuwa Province (132) and Southern Province (100) finished behind the champions.

Andrew de Silva, Secretary Ministry of Education was the chief guest and gave away the awards.

Pushpakumar axed, Mahanama back in pool

The National Cricket Selectors who met last evening at the Board headquarters selected a pool of 17 players in preparation for the forth coming tours of Bangladesh (late October), Sharjah (November) and Australia in late December.

Selectors have brought in Roshan Mahanama who was left out of the England tour which also created big chaos among Mahanama fans. Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa strengthen the pace attack. Their inclusion has brought the axe on Ravindra Pushpakumara who toured England last August.

Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Soysa will have face another fitness test before the final selection according to selectors.

Selectors request all players to contact Manager Ranjith Fernando or Coach Roy Dias regarding practices.

Kavin in upset win over Indika

Most of the seeded players in age groups of U-19, U-16 and U-13 qualified to the quarter finals yesterday in the Singnature Cologne Squash Championships at Otters Aquatic Club courts.

The only unseeded player to qualify from the U-16 is Kavin Jayawardene who went on to defeat fourth seeded Indika Cooray in a four setter.

Zahira College Maradana defeated Wesley College in their Under 13 Horlicks Trophy Division III cricket fixture at Campbell Park yesterday.

Zahira scored 159. Wesley College were shot out for 87.

Fifteen shuttlers off to Australia

A fifteen member shuttle team (eight boys) and (seven girls) will leave for Australia tomorrow to participate at the 4th World Junior Badminton Championship to be held in Melbourne from Oct. 4 to 11. Three officials will accompany the tour party.

Kanchana Geeganage (Sirimavo Bandaranaike BMV) is the most experienced shuttler on tour. She was a member of Badminton team which participated at the recently concluded 16th Commonwealth Games in Malaysia. Other players in the Girls team are Tharaka Abeywickrema, Dilini Jayasinghe (Sirimavo Bandaranaike BMV), Umayanga Ratnayake, Deshani Bandara (Musaeus), Kalpana Rasangi (Visakha) and Nadeesha Binduhewa (Dharmasoka).

The Boys team comprise of H. S. Kumarasiri, P. I. Abeysekera (Dharmaraja), Pubudu Tennekoon, K. I. Ariyadasa, Prabath Kumarasinghe (Royal), I. C. Sembapperuma (Trinity), Amila Rasantha (Sri Devananda, Ambalangoda) and Yohan Gunesekera (S. Thomas).

President of Sri Lanka Badminton Association and national coach Louise Karunaratne will accompany the team as coach. Jagath Patabendige and Miss Kanchana de Silva will act as Manager and lady chaperon on tour.

Couch Louise Karunaratne, speaking to ‘The Island’ said it is difficult for us to win every game. The experience gained through these kind of international events is much more important for our shuttlers.


Chamila a ten wicket haul

Chamila Jayasinghe’s ten wicket haul was the highlight of the drawn game between Old Dharmapalians and Air Force played at Pannipitiya over the week end. This was an under 23 encounter.

Old Dharmapalainas scored 228 while Air Force replied only with 121, Chamila Liyanage claiming 4 wickets for 25.

Following on Air Force fared much better scoring 274 for 8 wickets before declaring. Ajith Kumara (83) and S. Fernando (81) batted well for Air Force, in the second essay. Here too Chamila was able to grab six wickets.

Old Dharmapalians chasing a target of 167 in 25 overs were 159 for 8 at close.

Thushara and Chandrika take shuttle titles

Thushara Edirisinghe (Bartleet Group) and Chandrika de Silva (Seylan Bank), won the Men’s and Women’s Open Singles titles at "Pirelli" Open Individual Badminton Championship concluded at St. Joseph’s College courts.

Thushara and Chandrika managed to win triple crowns. Thushara the top seed defeated bottom seed Duminda Jayakody in a three setter. 13-15, 15-8, 15-9. Jayakody & Co.

Thushara partnering Niroshan Wijekoon defeated Duminda Jayakody and Palinda Halangoda to win the Men’s Doubles title. Later Thushara along with Chandrika de Silva beat Thushara de Silva and T. Nishanthi to grab the Mixed Doubles title.

Chandrika de Silva in the Singles event overcame T. Nishanthi (Sampath Bank) in straight sets 11-3, 11-3. Chandrika joining Pubudu Wanigasekera (Lake House) beat Sriyani Deepika (Masreq Bank) and Kumudini Mendis (HNB) 15-4, 15-6.

Ajith Wijesinghe (HAL/Sacks) went away with veteran’s Singles title. While J. S. A. Fernando (Bata Shoe Co) took the Masters Singles title.

Eraj Wijesinghe (Bartleet Group) and S. J. Weerasena Nawaloka Group carried away the Masters Doubles title.

Pepsi ACC trophy in Nepal

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) headed by Thilanga Sumathipala in association with Nepal Cricket Association will stage the second "Pepsi-ACC Trophy" cricket Tournament in Kathmandu, Nepal from October 3 to 13. This was decided at the Annual General Meeting of the ACC held in London recently.

Thilanga Sumathipala came out with idea of promoting the game among the countries attached to the ACC.

The participating countries are Bangladesh, Hongkong, Brunei, Papua New Guinea, Fuji, Japan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives, Thailand and UAE. The matches will be a limited overs.

The participating teams are slated into two groups as ‘A’ and ‘B’.

Preliminary rounds will be played on a round robin basis. Two top teams each group will qualified for the semis. The winners will go to the Pepsi Asia Cup which will be held in Bangladesh next year.

ACC will nominate ten umpires and five match referees from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka with on official per each venue. Four umpires, two match referees and two official will be sent from local Cricket Board.


Under - 13 rugby tourney

The under 13 division one and two rugby tournaments organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Union will be held in October.

The division two tournament is scheduled for October 3 and 4 while the division one tournament gets underway at the Royal College grounds, Colombo on October 17 and 18.

Entries for the division one tournament should be forwarded to M. J. Mudannayake, Secretary, Schools Rugby Football Union Wesley College, Colombo. The closing date for entries is October 13 (RN).


Karpov Chess Centre formed

The chess sport in Sri Lanka will get a boost with the forming of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club after the famous Russian grandmaster.The club was launched this week by the Russian Centre with the assistance of Union Assurance Ltd.

According to the President of the Anatoly Karpov Chess Club,Suneetha Wijesuriya,this new club would go a long way in furthering the sport in Sri Lanka.Accordingly,chess classes would be conducted and the setting up of a chess library too besides tournaments being conducted.

Ms,Wijesuriya said that Russia was in the forefront of this sport today and the formation of this club would go a long way here.This is because currently facilities to enhance the sport were lacking.As such,this club would cater to Sri Lankans in a big way.

The Director of the Russian Centre,V.M.Polozkov said that they had come forward with this launch to boost the sport in Sri Lanka.School children too would be welcome.

The Under 23 Segment ‘A’ cricket encounter between Singhe SC and Matara SC played at Matara esplanade ended in a no decision due to rain.

Perera and Salgado win bridge title

The Open Pairs Bridge Tournament organised by the Ja-Ela Bridge Circle and sponsored by Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques was held at the Hotel Sirimedura Seeduwa, last week and leading national pair Fritz Perera and M. P. Salgado emerged as winners.

They will receive the Three No Trumps Trophy and a cash award. Runners-up were Cecil Perera and Tony Savundranayagam of the Ja-Ela Bridge Circle. Anton Selvanayagam and K. P. Baskaran were placed third. Anthea de Alwis and Shanthi Rasiah were fourth and won the best ladies pairs prize.

M. Chelliah and S. Thillainadarajah were fifth, Karmini De Silva and H. A. Weerasooriya sixth. Rita de Alwis and Chandra Selvaratnam seventh, Dr. Dilanjan Soysa and Asoka Jayasinghe eighth, Terrence Fernando and Harold Perera were ninth and won the best outstation pairs prize.


Thomian Relay quartet dominate School Games

The S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia Relay team dominated the National School Games Swimming Championships by winning all the four Relays at the National School Games Swimming Championship concluded at the Stadium Swimming Complex last Monday.

The Thomian Eranga Fernando who was a major contributor for this Relay Quartat, excelled individually as well by winning three individual Golds to his credit.

In the Girls Championships Thikshana Ratnasekera of Musaeus College, Colombo bagged four gold medals.

S. Thomas’ College won the Boys Championships while Mahamaya Kandy clinched the girls tournament.

Meanwhile K. P. Priyantha Kumara of Nivanthaka Chethiya MV, Anuradhapura pedalled his way to win the School Games Boys Cycling Gold Medal. S. Amal Swanga of St. Sebestians’, Kandana won the Silver while K. A. Ravindra I. Rodrigo bagged the Bronze.

St. Andrew MV, Mawalatenne MV and Wickramabahu MMV all from Gampola won the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals at the Weight Lifting Championships.

Ginaraja MV, Gampola won the Gold while Hemamali BMV and Seethadevi BMV, Kandy won the Silver and Bronze medals.

Sports creates a disciplined society

Dialog GSM official sponsors of the Sri Lanka contingent for the 16th Commonwealth Games in Malaysia felicitated the two medal winners Sugath Tillekeratne and Sriyani Kulawansa and Damayanthi Dharsha who managed to enter the final of the 400 m. event at Union Place last Saturday.

Dr. Hans Wijesuriya Chief Executive Officer Dialog GSM speaking on the occasion said that his firm was happy to have the sponsorship for Sri Lanka team which consisted of 95 members inclusive of Mediamen. Competitors took part in 22 events. Comm. Games falls once in four years. He thanked Hemasiri Fernando Chairman Telecom and Chairman of NOC on behalf of Dialog GSM and its parent company Telecom Malaysia for making this a viable sponsorship.

He said in Malaysia one person personally questioned me whether we are disappointed with same. I answered in the negative and said we have already won two medals while another athlete qualified for the final.

Sriyani Kulawansa became the first woman athlete from Sri Lanka to win a medal at Commonwealth Games this alone is sufficient for us he said. Sugath Tillekeratne ended with a bronze medal. These three athletes have brought glory to their motherland, he added.

Jeevan Kumaratunga Deputy Minister for Sports speaking said the Ministry has a well planned sports programme under the guidance of Minister S. B. Dissanayake. He also added that sports play a vital role in making a disciplined society. Adding further he thanked the mediamen for their coverage on sports which helps promote sports. He finally thanked the MTN Malaysia and Dialog GSM for the biggest sponsorship given towards the Sri Lanka’s participation at the 16th Commonwealth Games.

Two coaches Dervin Perera and Anura Bandara who trained these athletes too should be thanked for their part well done.

Three athletes and two coaches were given cellular phones by the Dialog GSM.


Winners’ protest to FFSL

The Winners Football Club Negombo has complained to the Sports Ministry and Football Federation Secretary about the alleged discrimination for their club by the FFSL.

The Club President Dr. Uve Ludt has threatened legal action against the FFSL if a favourable answer is not given for them.

Following is the text of the letter.

With deep regret we are realizing, that WINNERS SC again was discriminated by the FFSL. Absurd we received no response to our letter dated 17.8.98 with regard to our F.A. Cup participation in 1998 and the issue of our ID Passes of FFSL.

We also like to remind you about our letter dated 18.08.98 with respect to the assaulting of our players by Don Bosco Members.
