Royal - Richmond clash the key game today Royal College led by fourth year coloursman Thushan Amarasuriya open their inter-school cricket season when they take on Richmond College Galle at Reid Avenue today and tomorrow. Royalists have a well balanced side with eight coloursmen. They have a slight advantage as they play this match at their home grounds. Richmondites could not be underestimated as they too have six senior players. Royalists strong batting line up consists of experienced openers Ravi Pieris and Angelo Perera followed by skipper Thushan Amarasuriya, Jehan Mubarak, Ruchira Jayasuriya, Dhanushka Perera and Andrea Perera younger brother of Angelo. Jehan Mubarak is the most consistant batsman who completed thousand runs last season. The Royalists pace attack is led by Sanjeewa Udumalagala with Harshana Rajakaruna and skipper Amarasuriya as one change bowler who can supports the front liners. The off spinner Jehan Mubarak took his first five wicket haul against Richmond last season while leg spinners Harith Rajakaruna, Dhanushka Perera and Fazal Ahamed could trouble the Richmondites. Richmonds opener Avantha Redeegammanagedara who was not available for the first match against S. Thomas and Oshad Sumathipala, Manoj Chaturanga and skipper Dilantha Sumathipala and all rounder Omesh Wijesiriwardane are the players who could pile up runs for Galle school. Maeanwhile Wesley College led by Dharshika Jayakody will play against Thurstan at Campbell Park while St. Peters take on Presidents College Rajagiriya at Bambalapitiya. St. Josephs College who recorded their first victory over De Mezenod Kandana will play St. Anthonys Wattala at Darley Road, while Thomians travel to Kandy to play against Kingswood College. Bad weather which prevails at present could prevent all these matches to commence on schedule. Nationalised Services Carrom Association is organising its inaugural Awards Nite to be held at Shalika Hall, Narahenpita on 9th October (today) 1998, at 6.30 p.m. Chief Guest on this occasion will be S. Yasmin and Shammi to coach juniors Shammi Silva and Yasmin Zarook were appointed as coaches for junior squash players at a special committee meeting held at Trans Asia Hotel last Tuesday. weekend The Lanka Lions Athletic Club inaugural athletic championships, exclusively for its club members will be held on October 10 and 11 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. A total of 1580 competitors, which is claimed to be an all time record will quest for glory in this event. Parry Liyanage, Vice President of the Club addressing the media said that this number is a unique achievement for a club founded only six months ago. "We do not encourage any athletes from other clubs to take part in our meet. We have also decided not to accept late entries", he stressed. He also said that next year they would conduct a separate event for the juniors and seniors on a district championships basis. "We will have athletes from all districts for our next years championships,", he said. He also thanked Secretary G. L. S. Perera and Vice President Palitha Fernando for providing accommodation for all athletes and undertaking 90% of organising the event. "We will provide transport expenses for all athletes and I think that is another first from our club. Explaining their plans for next year he said that they hope to bring down foreign athletes from India and Malaysia and stage a series of road races. "Since Nestle Lanka is heavily involved in marathon, we did want to get involved, he said. Liyanage former National Coach said that they will conduct a Volleyball championship and rename the Club, Lanka Lions Sports Club. Deputy President P. Don Victor said that their club was formed purely to promote athletics. "We are not aiming to grab power at the Athletic Association, he said. Fernando the vice President of the club said that it was very sad to see the country ignoring internationally recognised and qualified people like Don and GLS. "Some sports clubs conduct open meets since they do not have participants, he said. The Lanka Lions also accepted a suggestion made by The Island to conduct a one day Grand Prix Invitation Championships which would award prize money. It was disclosed that past athletes like former sprint record holder Sriyantha Dissanayake had donated trophies for their meet. Many national record holders are down for competition in this event. Lankan ruggerites impress in Australia The Sri Lankan Ruggerites who are now in Australia did well to make the country proud by annexing the Challenge Shield after defeating Northern Territory convincingly. After a poor show at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games the boys have pulled up their shocks and dished out one excellent rugby to bring glamour. According to reports the forwards have done a wonderful job led by Viraj Prasanna. Debutant Nilufar Ibrahim and Hettiarachchi had given their best and Hettiarachchi had occupied full backs berth. These two had done the conversion for the Lankans. Kishan Musafer, the gutty Lankan winger had planted four tries. He had scored two each in each half and the scoreline stood 17/10 at short whistle.
