Roshan, Hashan lead in practice match

A limited over practice cricket match will be played on October 13 at SSC grounds. Roshan Mahanama and Hashan Tillekeratne will lead the respective sides. Both teams consist of players who had been selected for the tour of Bangladesh and Sharjah.

Ranil spins Lumbini to victory

Lumbini MV skipper Ranil Dhammika’s matchbag of eleven wickets guided them to an innings and 81 runs victory over Siri Piyaratne MV Padukka in their inter-school cricket fixture concluded at Colts grounds yesterday.

This was the first outright victory for Lumbini MV in this cricket season.

Lumbini MV declared their overnight score of 330 for nine wickets and Padukka lads were 73 all out.

In their following on they were again bundled out for 176, at 1.30 p.m.

Ranil Dhammika the left arm leg spinner who captured 5 for 25 in the first innings took 6 for 62, to shatter the Siri Piyaratne innings. Lumbini MV wicket keeper Sandun Senanayake had eight victims.

Lumbini MV coach Dinesh Weerasighe said that they are now in the ‘A’ division. ‘But most of the ‘A’ division teams do not give fixtures to us. This is very disappointing,’ he said.

The next match against Sri Sumangala MV Panadura will be played on October 26-27 at Colts grounds.

Bolgoda windsurfing on Sunday

Aqua Pearl Villa Bolgoda will be the venue for the 3rd Old Spice ‘White Water’ windsurfing Championship on the 11th October (Sunday) on the banks of Bolgoda.

Old Spice has come forward once again to give a moral booster for Windsurfing by sponsoring this race, and incidentally Old Spice will be launching their new cologne products under the name ‘White Water’ for men.

This is the first time a national level windsurf race is being held at Bolgoda which is only 45 minutes drive from Colombo and ideal for water sport activities.

The course for the race will be a ‘M’ shape course with a distance of 1 1/2-2km and 3 rounds per race. There will be two races for the day with the first race commencing at 12.30 p.m. Around 30 competitors are due to take part and the results will be taken for ranking of windsurfers.

Boardsailing & Windsurf Club will be conducting the event.

The club has given a tremendous boost to windsurfing by bringing 20 Olympic One Design Boards for training and conducting of races and has done something constructive in the windsurfing arena in Sri Lanka.

Through the affiliation to International Mistral Class Organization (IMCO) the BWC has gained access for local windsurfers to take part in overseas races and Sri Lanka has been invited to take part in all the international events of the race calendar on IMCO and ISAF which is the International Sailing Federation.

A day of entertainment is been planned by Aqua Pearl Hotel with a sumptuous buffet and calypso band in attendance, spectators can look forward to a exciting day of windsurfing and water sport.


Jayakody shines in drawn match

Maris Stella College set a victory target of 185 runs to win, off a maximum 22 overs, put up shutters, from the outset of their second essay and scored 41 for 1 wicket as their inter-school fixture against Wesley College petered into a drab draw at Campbell Park yesterday.

In an otherwise dull match the man who stole the limelight was Wesley skipper Dharshika Jayakody who came-up with a stupendous all-round display. Jayakody who cracked a whirlwind unbeaten 171 in the first innings followed it up with the cheery as well when he returned economical figures of 10-6-14-4 to restrict Maris Stella to a first innings total of only 208.

For the visitors middle order bat Mevan Fernando top scored with a fluent 83 which came off 185 balls with 14 fours, while Ashan Dias also gave him good support contributing 52 runs with the two of them involved in a 115 run stand for the seventh wicket that ultimately took the Negombo School to safe waters.

Maiya heads Asian Games squad

Dr. Maiya Gunasekere has been appointed as the Chef de Mission for the Sri Lankan contingent at the fourth coming Asian Games which is to be held in Bangkok, Thailand next December.

His appointment was done by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) after a meeting held recently.

Maiya accompanied the Lankan Rugby team at the recently concluded Commonwealth games in Malaysia. (AN)


IAAF to honour five Lankan women

The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) of Sri Lanka has nominated five women as recipients of the ‘IAAF Women’s Year,’ commemorative medals.

On a request made by IAAF names of five persons whom the AAA considered to have made special contribution to women’s athletics in Sri Lanka were forwarded, indicating reasons for their nominations.

These five names were accepted by the World Body and they have forwarded a Special Commemorative Medal and Certificate to be presented to the five ladies. The presentation will be made on 18th October, 1998 during the Women’s Athletic Championships scheduled to be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium on 17th and 18th.

The five female award winners are as follows (In alphabetical order): Shanthi I. de Abrew - National record holder in Long Jump. Qualified AAA Technical Official. Former member of the AAA of Sri Lanka. Has served in the field of Physical Education with special emphasis on teaching various sports, for over 34 years. Presently deputy President of ACEA Club.

Nancy Rathnavibhushana de Silva - A founder member and first Secretary of the Southern Province Girls Athletic Association founded in 1957 and continued to serve as Secretary until 1965. A founder member of the Southern Province Amateur Athletic Association founded in 1968. Founder of the Shepeardians Sports Club in 1967. Technical Official of the Ceylon Amateur Athletic Association, having passed the Examination in Judges and Referees, Time Keeping and Starting. Have been participating as Technical Official for over 34 years. A member of the C.T. & F.C. for nearly forty years and presently a Vice President of the Club.

Ivy Dissanayake - A member of the College athletic team at Ave Maria Convent and St. Joseph’s Convent, Kegalle. A Technical Official for over 30 years. An Athletic Coach for over 20 years, having coached H.F.C. and Newstead, Negombo and produced National Champions.

K. G. Bandara Gunawardena - Sri Lankan record holder in 100m., 200m., 400m. and represented Sri Lanka at the Asian and Commonwealth Games. Athletic Coach and presently a Committee member of the AAA of Sri Lanka. Also a member of the Asian Women’s Committee. Presently a member of the Track Master Sports Club and Asst. Director of the Department of Sports Development.

Shanthi Podimahathmaya - A National athlete who represented Sri Lanka and also winning Colours in Athletics. qualified AAA Technical Official for nearly 15 years. SSC trounce Kandy CC

SSC beat Kandy Youth CC by an innings and 101 runs in their under 23 cricket encounter played at SSC grounds last week-end.

Batting first SSC were all out for 301, with Mahela Jayawardane (107) and Tilan Samaraweera (104) scoring centuries. In reply Kandy Youth bundled out for 101 in the first innings and all out for 99 in the follow on. Ranga Dilhara Fernando captured match haul of 8 wickets for 62 runs.

Yasodara BMV runners-up
Piliyandala Central U-14 shuttle champs

Piliyandala Central emerged victorious while Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya were runner up in the Girls ‘E’ division under 14 Badminton team championships concluded at S. Thomas Gymnasium last week-end.

Yasodara BMV junior Badminton team coached by Nilanthi Jayasekara achieved this, after taking to the sport in two years.

The coach Nilanthi said that this was the first title they won with limited facilities, "Earlier we qualified for the semi finals of the under 16 team championships in the national school games.

Nayomi Sadamali Perera captained the Yasodara BMV team. They lost to Piliyandala Central in the under 14 team Championship.

However the promising Yasodara Team made a thrilling final and ended with a 3-2, triumph. The runner-up team:—
