Cologne Squash Championship Gehan M. Fernando and Disna Ranjani emerged victorious in the mens and womens Signature Cologne Open Squash Championship concluded at Intercontinental Hotel Courts, yesterday. Gehan who was a ranked player in England and on a holiday, made a straight sets victory over National Champion Gihan Fernando. The two Fernandos were engaged in a cliff hanger in the first set and finally Gehan edged out Gihan 9.7. In the next two Gehan, who represented Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Games was beaten all ends up, going down tamely and lost the match 2-9 and 5-9. Meanwhile the top seed Disna Ranjani also dashed a three set to nil victory over bottom seed Kushani Daluwatte. Ranjani beat her opponent 9-4 in the first set. Both of them made a good fight during the second set and the experienced Ranjani ended it with a long game 10-8. In the third and final set she emerged victorious at 9-2. Hirantha Goonasena of Stafford International College beat 16-year-old Thumjan Navin Samarasinghe to take the boys under 19 title. Seventeen years old Goonasena, won the first set 9-2, but young Samarasinghe made a good fight back to win the second set 9-4. However Goonasena used his full experience to win the next two sets 9-0, 9-4. In the Masters over 45 final National Coach Lakdasa Cooray made a tough battle against Colonel Sarath Jayawardane of Upali Group. This was a very thrilling game and both Cooray and Jayawardane made beautiful strokes during their game. Cooray won the first match set 10-8, 9-7 and 9-6. Eranga Amunugama clinched the Boys under 16 title while Palitha Weerasinghe clinched the Mens Intermediate (over 35) Championship. I.C.L. Marketing Ltd. sponsored this Signature Cologne Championship and Chief Executive (Marketing) J. Perera was the chief guest and gave away the awards. Padmini Samarasinghe and Rohan Perera the Secretary and President of the Sri Lanka Squash Federation also graced this occasion. The chief guest J. Perera said, I came to Sri Lanka five days before and earlier, stayed in India. He further added, when I was in India we conducted the squash tournament and we are very happy to conduct in this tournament and expect to give full support to the Squash Federation in the future. over 45 Boys Under 19 Womens Open Mens Open St. Anthonys a talented cricket team St. Anthonys College, Kandy a school which has been a major force in school cricket, this season, is blessed with a fine talented side, according to their Coach H. M. Muthalib former outstanding cricketer to come out of this school. This time, the Antonians are led by allrounder A. S. Pinnaduwa who is quite experienced. The formidable Antonian XI will have players like Nafees Nizam, a good stroke maker, R. Wickremapala, R. Deen, Ricardo Gunaratne, a good paceman A. R. Amunugama, K. S. Jayaratne and B. Pavaz who are sure to give off their best. They have played two games, this season against St. Annes and Vidyaratha. Both ended in no decisions. Kandy Municipal Commissioner to boost sports Kandys New Municipal Commissioner, Jayantha Bulumulla, a top notch sportswoman is all out to give a filip for sports, through the Municipal Play grounds and community centers. Jayantha Bulumulla, a fine basketball, netballer and athlete who represented the All-Ceylon University team, says that sports should be given a big hand. She is all out to develop the 26 community centers, under the Municipal Council. She has promised that in future the Getambe grounds will not be given for parking, and it will be for sports. After the take over of the Bogambara grounds, there is no proper place for sports in Kandy city. |
