Alethea, Wycherly joint champions
Alethea International School and Wycherley International School were declared joint champions of the International Schools Cricket Tournament which concluded recently.
The final between Alethea Intl. and Wycherley Intl. had to be abandoned due to heavy rains. When play was halted Alethea who batted first were 31 for 3 wickets.
Wycherly on their way to reach the final defeated Colombo International school in the quarter-final by five wickets.
While Alethea beat Ikra Intl. School on a faster run rate.
The other quarter finals saw Stafford Intl. School beat Gateway by eight wickets Asian Intl. defeated Leighton Park School by 17 runs.
Wycherley International who faced Asian International school in the first semi-final defeated their opponent by six wickets. M. Martenstyne top scored for Wycherley with 40 runs.
The other semi final could not be played due to rains and the finalist was decided on a toss of a coin. Alethea called right and qualified for the final.
The Best Batsman of the tournament award was given to Michael Raj (Asian Intl. School) for his highest score of 136 against Leighton Park School. The Best Bowlers award went to Hasitha Kannangara (Stafford Intl. School) while Michael Martenstyn (Wycherley) carried away the Man of the Series Award.
The highlight of the tournament was the record breaking opening stand worth 214 runs set by M. Raj and T. Samidon (Asian Intl. School) in a quarter final game against Leighton Park.
The tournament was sponsored by Kotmale Dairy Products.

Royal rugby champions
by Ravi NagahawatteRoyal College Colombo have been declared 1998 inter-school Milo League Rugby champs following a decision taken by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association at a committee meeting held at Zahira College on October 11. This final decision has put to an end to a stirred up issue which occurred when a participating team lodged a protest regarding a fixture which was accommodated in the Royal rugby calendar, well past the closing date for matches.
"The points of the final fixture was counted in favour of Royal College under the directions of The Director of Sports (Education), Olivia Gamage" said N. J. Mudannayake, Secretary SLSRFU when contacted by The Island.
Delayed start hampers Mini Rugby
by Ravi NagahawatteThe first days play of the inter-school mini rugby tournament looked yet another unfinished assignment of the schools authorities who struggled in their attempts to conclude the scheduled fixtures at Reid Avenue yesterday.
Barely visible shadows of school boy ruggerites gave a glimpse of what was happening as the last of matches were worked off in semi darkness. An official confirmed that there were ten matches left in the list when the final two matches of the day were in progress. "The tournament got off to a delayed start due to unavoidable reasons" stated another official.
The second day of the tournament will commence today at 7.30 a.m. starting with the incomplete fixtures.
The National Athletic Championships is scheduled to be held on 17th and 18th October, 1998 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. On the 17th the meet will be held from 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. and on 18th from 9.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
Over 200 athletes have entered this event including all star athletes. Events worked out will be for under 15, 17, 20.
U-17 Singer Trophy Awards on Oct. 25
The Awards ceremony of the recently concluded Schools Under 17 Singer Trophy Cricket Tournament will take place at Kularatne Hall, Ananda College on October 25 at 3.45 p.m.
The winners of Division I, II, and III will recieve their Trophies and Certificates on this day. Hemaka Amarasuriya Chairman (Singer Sri Lanka Ltd.) will be the chief guest and give away the awards. (DR)
The school cricket fixtures between Royal-Isipatana, S. Thomas' Mahinda and Trinity-St. Benedicts which were scheduled to commence yesterday were postponed due to bad ground conditions caused by heavy rains during the past few days. According to masters-in-charge of cricket from these schools all these matches will be played on a later date.
The postponed match between S.Thomas' College and D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya will be played on Oct. 19 and 20. This will be D. S. Senanayake Vidyalaya's first fixture for the season.
Next weekend Royal College clash with Dharmapala Vidyalaya at Pannipitiya. (DR)
A rugby coaching camp followed by a tournament organised by the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will be held on October 17 (Saturday) at Tissa M.V. grounds, Kalutara.
This event is organised by Y. C. Chang, Chairman Development Committee SLRFU and Iqubal Hassan, President WPRFU.
Over 600 students from Kalutara M.V., Tissa M.M.V., Holy Cross, Kalutara, Royal, Panadura, Christ King College, Hekitta, Harischandra, Negombo, Maligakanda M.V., Maradana, Vidyawardena M.M.V., Narahenpita, T. B. Jayah, Slave Island, De La Salle College, Modera will be participating for the coaching camp.
Sisiro Fonseka and S. W. Chang will conduct the coaching camp. Basil Rodrigo Co-ordinator Western Province targets to coach more than 50 schools before the FedEx Trophy Tournament which will be held next year. (AN)
The 22nd Mercantile Hockey Sevens organised by the Mercantile Hockey Association and sponsored by Unilever Ceylon Limited will be held at the Havelocks Sports Club on October 18 commencing from 8 a.m. onwards.
The matches will be conducted in five groups. The respective winners and the runners-up will play in the final.
The winners of the "A" division will receive the Bristol Trophy while the winners of the "B", "C", "D" and "E" divisions will carry away Singer, Lifebouy, Edmund J. Cooray and Ceylon Cold Stores Trophy respectively.
Dr. Sarath Abayawardena and Mrs. Abayawardena, Technical director, Unilever Ceylon Limited will be the chief guest while Valipuram Theagarajah and Mrs. Theagarajah, Deputy Chairman Brown and Company will be the guest of honour. (AN)
The Milo Inter-School under-13 division I mini rugby tournament will be held from October 16 to 18 at Royal Rugby grounds Reid Avenue.
All preliminary round matches will commence today from 3 p.m. onwards and the round robin matches will be played in 13 groups. (AN)
The postponed Moore Shield Hockey final between CH and FC and Park SC, Matale will be held today at Astro Turf Reid Avenue commencing at 4.30 p.m. Singer Sri Lanka Limited are sponsoring this tournament.
Meanwhile, the ninth Womens Hockey National Championship scheduled for October 9 to 11 has been postponed until 23 October. the venue for this tournament remain the same at Matale. (AN)
