Rugby Sevens The international Rugby Sevens conducted by the Singapore Cricket Club and sponsored by Sea Consortium Limited will be held on November 7 and 8 at the Padang Cricket grounds here. This popular tournament which is been held to coincide with the Singapore Cricket Clubs anniversary will see teams from almost twenty countries competing. It is going to be a Club sevens and the best players and their champion club of respective countries will be in the fray for honours. According to organisers, 24 teams have confirmed their participation. They will be devided into eight groups and each group will consist of three teams. First day the matches will be played on a round robin basis and after completion, the winner of each group will move into the Cup Championship. The other remaining teams will play each other once again and the winner of this match will qualify for the Plate and the loser to the Bowl. So far, a team from Australia called as Australia Legends, a back up team for Aussie Sevens team, Tridel of New Zealand packed with youngsters who are knocking on the door at national level, Durban Hooligans of South Africa, Cobra of Malaysia, Wanderers of Brunei, Hong Kong Football Club, Kurumini of Japan, Wattom Busy of Kenya are some of the teams which will be out to dish out some exciting rugby. Meanwhile, the Lankans will go into this tournament as the Rugby Union Club of Sri Lanka. The side led by Indrajith Bandaranayake is filled with freshers at Sevens level except for Asanga Rodrigo and M. J. M. Mushtaq who were members of the squad which took part in the Commonwealth Games early last month. Sri Lankas best Sevens performance was way back in 1996 in Dubai in the World Cup qualifying round tournament. They lost to Kenya 31-29 in the Bowl final. Apart from that, they had failed to make a name for themselves in this short timed game. A thoroughly dissappointed national coach, Ana Saranapala commenting on Sri Lankas loss to Singapore in the Asian Championship final said. "This tournament will enable us to see our strength. We have a new look side. My main intention is to plann things and mould the side together in preparation for Asian Games Sevens Tournament. So this is the best opportunity for us to analyse our weaknesses and overcome them". Emerald
