Thushara and Chandrika win singles titles at Otters Shuttle C'ships Otters '98 Badminton Championships (Members & Open Ranked National Players) There were outstanding performances - by Otter's members and National Players in the Open Title for the Men's Singles was won by Thushara Edirisinghe who beat his arch rival Duminda Jayakody, who appeared jaded and somewhat unfit. Chandrika de Silva maintained her dominance in the Women's Section by easily picking up the title. Of the several outstanding shuttler-members of Otters, was of Cornel Perera who, once again won the Masters Single Title in a hard-fought game where he displayed exceptional skills A remarkable feature was the Masters Single Semi-Final when Cornel Perera completely swamped his opponent, not conceding a single point with a 15-0 and 15-0 victory over R. Jumar who had held the Doubles Masters National Title for the past three years. Cornel created history by setting up this unique record. Cornel also won a three-set cliff-hanger in the Masters Double when he and his partner, P. S. Rodrigo, beat the current National Masters Champions, R. Jumar and the evergreen Sam Lovell. Cornel with Sarath Silva followed up the winning streak at Otters defeating Eraj Wijesinghe and J. Samuel in straight sets to clinch the '98 National Masters Doubles Cup. Otters Singles Champion was Shakeel, and the Women's Title went to Vishna Ranjini. Have Your Say The recent coverage of the Wills Mini World Cup as well as the Sharjah Cup was not bad, but for the common mistakes committed by T.V channels. Like other channels Swarnawahini too, was more interested in revenue and have many commercials scheduled. This prevented the viewer from seeing the 1st and the 6th ball in many overs. This also prevented the viewer from listening to many knowledgeable views expressed by experts. It was also appalling to note that Swarnavahini had not even spared the prize distribution, scheduling commercials and cutting off the instant thrills. Due to this very sorry situation many cricket fans were compelled to listen to the interesting commentary provided by the team of commentators of the S.L.B.C With the retirement of Premasara Epasinghe the Singhala commentary which was not very sound have now reached a good standard with the description provided by Jayantha Weerasinghe and Upali Wijesinghe along with some of the trainees. With the English commentary headed by the no. 1 commentator Roshan Abeysinghe backed up by Aubrey Kuruppu and Suresh Chandra it has been a pleasure to the listeners ear. The S.L.B.C. sports service no doubt was once again the saviour of cricket fans in Sri Lanka. I am sure the cricket-loving public in the country will join me in congratulating the S.L.B.C. sports service. And Samantha Algama better known as the "Satellite Man". Who has been a tower of strength to the SLBC Sports Service. Our thanks are also due to Mrs. Soma Rodrigo, Director Sports Service, as well as to the Chairman Janadasa Peries and Eric Fernando the hard working Director General . Ebert Silva, |
