No Freedom for past National
players Several past National Soccer players are up in arms against a directive by the Football Federation (FFSL) barring them from utilizing their Football Federation identity card to witness the on going Bristol Freedom four nation tournament, at the stadium. The FFSL Secretary C. Perera conformed that they have decided to temporary suspend all passes issued to players and Referees for this event. He said that if a past player wish to witness Freedom cup matches he could do so by coming to the FFSL at Reid Avenue Colombo 7 and obtaining a special pass. "Or else they could purchase a ticket at either Rs. 25, 100 or 150" he said. Chryshantha also said that they did not know who issued these players passes or when and therefore suspension of these passes could iron out a lot of problems," he said. Naina Mohamed who scored the historic goal in 1988, to put Sri Lanka to a 1-nil victory over Thailand, was one such player at the receiving end, of this surprising move by the FFSL. "I was given permission to enter from the main gate but at the pavilion entrance I was humiliated," he said. He asked if this was the treatment meted out to recent players by the FFSL. "I wonder if Arjuna Ranatunge or Muralitharan would ever be refused entry at any cricket match, even in the next decade," he said. Another former player said that a similar incident happened to him and he was forced to buy a Rs. 150 ticket. "Still I had to witness the match six or seven rows behind since the FFSL officials families in large numbers were occupying the first few rows," he said. A Badulla National Soccer player asked the wisdom behind the FFSL move, asking players to come to their Headquarters to collect a pass to witness the match. "Since there is a Secretariat at Galadari Hotel there is no one at FFSL even to answer a call," he said. The FFSL Secretarys statement that players could buy tickets at the entrance is contrary to the view expressed by the FFSL President V. Manilal Fernando at the press confab. "We are not staging this tournament to earn money" he said at that time. Following is the clause stated in the FFSL Official ID Card. "This identity card entitles the bearer to enter in to any arena to witness free of charge any soccer tournament conducted by Football Federation of Sri Lanka or any of its affiliates. The copy of the players ID received by The Island was signed by FFSL Former Secretary Brdg. Ananda Weerasekera. We will win Sri Lankan team Skipper cum Custodian Lalith Weerasinghe said that they are likely to drop Imitiaz and bring in Anis. "We are confident today and are hoping to beat Malaysia by at least a victory margin of three goals," he said. Asked why Sri Lanka failed to win against Maldives he said it was due to a small mistake. "This happened in the last minute and we did not have time to recover," he added. The Sri Lankans play Malaysia at 6.30 p.m. while Maldives confront India at 4 p.m., today.
