Ranil’s double sees Lumbini win

A fine double by Ranil Dhammika, who took a match bag of ten wickets, and scored a fine half-century , helped Lumbini MV to an eight wicket win over Piliyandala Cen-tral in their inter school cricket fixture played at the Colts grounds recently.

Piliyandala Central were shot out for 105 in the first innings with S. K. Kodippili top scoring with 34. Damith Indunil, N. Abeyratne too took three wickets each.

Lumbini MV replying made 213 for 8 with the help of two half centuries from Sajith Dilantha and Ranil Dhammika.

Junior netballers clinch Asian title

Sri Lankan Youth Netball team beat Singapore 51-30 to clinch the inaugural Asian Youth Netball Championships at New Delhi yesterday.

The team led by national player Harshini Wijayalath maintained an unblemished record in the event winning all their 5 first round matches.

According to Netball Federation President Tamara Herath, the Australian netball officials who organised the event had said the Lankan Juniors are a fine set to face any kind of challenge. This victory brings the senior team its lowest as they lost all their matches and was placed one before the last at the Commonwealth Games last August.

Sri Lanka’s junior teams victories were against India 58-17, Hong Kong 60-15, Maldives 76-27, Singapore 56-36 and Malaysia 50-39.

In the finals beat Singapore 51-30, Sri Lanka team was coached by I. R. Tissera and assisted by Sakuntala Wijetunge while consultant coach was Olivia Gamage.


Ragama CC lose on first innings

Anthonians SC gained a first innings victory over Ragama CC in a Division II fixture concluded at Air Force grounds Katunayake over the week end.

Ragama CC who batted first were bowled out for 129. S. Priyantha top scored for Ragama CC with 43. While Fleming Joseph captured 4 wickets for 23. Namal Fernando and C. Kumara captured two wickets each. In their second essay they were 146 for 3. C. Hettiarachchi and D. V. Gunewardena scored half centuries.

Anthonians totalled 221/6 in reply. Mahesh Kanthan (80) and S. Dissanayake 56 batted well for Anthonians while Manoj Hemaratne too chipped in with 42 valuable runs.
