Paceman Ruchira Perera for Aussie tour

The National Cricket Selectors who met last evening decided to include SSC’s left arm paceman Ruchira Perera to the squad to tour Australia later this month. He will be an additional paceman to the side.

Muthiah Muralitharan and Nuwan Soysa have been declared fit for the strenuous tour where Lankans face around 18 one dayers involving Australia and England for the Carlton United Series. Sri Lanka play their first game on January 11, 1999.

It was also likely that Aravinda de Silva who is nursing an injury has not recovered fully. The selectors expect him to be fit by the time the tournament gets underway. He will be closely watched by teams physio Alex Kontorwi.

The team leaves the island on December 28.

Gold and Silver Cup Soccer tourneys to commence shortly

The Gold Cup and the Silver Cup tournaments conducted by the Colombo Football league will commence shortly. The draw for the above was held on December 11.

Gold Cup tourney has attracted 16 teams which will be grouped as group A and B while the Silver cup competition will be among 32 teams too will be grouped into two.

SLSCA celebrates golden jubilee

Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association which celebrates its golden jubilee has organised three under 15 limited over games in connection with its celebrations.

SLSCA President’s XI will meet teams from Southern Province Schools, Kandy Schools and Southern Province — Kandy Combined XI.

The first game against Southern Province schools commence today at Uyanwatte Stadium, Matara.

Kandy schools will play their game against President’s XI on December 24 at Campus grounds. In the final game a combined team from Kandy Schools and Southern Schools will take on President’s XI at Premadasa Stadium on Dec 29. (DR)


Malshan leads Moratuwa schools

Moratuwa Schools combined Under 17 team will play a two day cricket encounter with the visiting Kent Under-17 team today and tomorrow at the De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa.

The match organised by the Moratuwa Cricket Council and its president Kavinath Gunasekera said that this was a good opportunity for the school boy cricketers of the Moratuwa schools to display their prowess. Three leading schools St. Sebastian’s, Prince of Wales and Moratu Maha Vidyalaya has nominated their leading Under-17 players for the pool.

The skipper of the side is Malshan Fernando of St. Sebastian’s leads the side. He has represented Sri Lanka Schools Under-17 team. The poolist for selection of the team: Malshan Fernando (Capt.), Patrick O’brien, Suranga Ferdinando, Suranga Silva, Chamara Perera (St. Sebastian’s), Rashan Peiris, Shanaka Cooray, Manjula Bandara, Upendra Fernando, Lakmal Peiris (Prince of Wales), Amal Buddhika, Vishwajith Mendis, Radisha Shanuka, Thushara Sanjeewa and Sampath Perera (Moratu Maha Vidyalaya).

The Manager of the team is Cecil R. Wijeyasena Secretary of the Moratuwa Cricket Council. The coaches of the three teams are Neil Rajapaksa (St. Sebastian’s), Bandula de Silva (Prince of Wales) and Chrysanthus Fernando (Moratu MV).
