St. Benedicts will mainly depend on six seniors By Althaf Nawaz This year the team will be skippered by wicket-keeper batsman Joel Savarimuthupulle. Joel, himself is a fourth year coloursman who has played a vital role towards their success. He started keeping wickets while he was playing junior cricket and last season continued in the first eleven as well. Apart from his wicket keeping skills he is also a good batsman who can bat at any position. Joel scored 350 runs last season while claiming 30 victims. Third year coloursman Chintaka Perera will be the deputy skipper. Perera bats in the number three slot and has fared exceptionally well. He scored 400 runs last season comprising four half centuries. This year, he has one unbeaten century against Maris Stella College, Negombo. Bens has a balanced team and is improving match by match. They have played five matches of which they lost to St. Josephs badly. They had mixed fortunes last season, winning two matches and losing an equal number of games in their 17 match calendar. Right handers Rushan Munasinghe and Channaka Devabandu are opening the batting for Bens. These two have had done a fairly good job but have to improve a lot more in the up coming matches. Asiri Gunatilake and Suranga Fernando will share the new ball. Gunatilake is a useful all rounder who is capable of turning things their way. Left arm leg spinner Shahene Perera will anchor the spin department. Perera, who, is a promising cricketer is the other Benedictine to reach the 50-wicket milestone last season. He had three five-wicket hauls against Ananda, St. Annes and Kingswood. He has a few other players to support him as spinners. Overall, Benedictine fielding is capable of challenging any opponent. This year, St. Benedicts is coached by Udayananda Perera. He is taking great pains to mould them together and make this side one of the best in the schools arena. The squad Chintaka Perera (V. Capt.)
