Congress will not run on PA ticket at future PC
polls Ashraff condemns NWPC elections
as a sham Minister
urges national unity Ports Minister
M.H.M. Ashraff condemned last weeks Wayamba
Provincial Council election as a "sham"
and said that it had caused serious problems
between the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC)
which he leads and President Chandrika
Kumaratungas SLFP.
Ashraff
who said that he was happy in the circumstances
that none of his party candidates have been
returned to the NWPC - the SLMC fielded four
candidates - wryly commented "we had to face
still opposition from the SLFP and not the
UNP."
JVP
activists conducted a demonstration at Lipton
Circus on Thursday condemning what they called
the ugly role the PA government
played at the Wayamba polls and calling for a
fresh election. Demonstrators alleged the
government resorted to every imaginable
polls-related violation ranging from murder to
vote rigging to secure a victory which otherwise
was not there. (Pic by Eranga Jayawardena)
