Ranatunga and Jardine

Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga has become the most hated figure in Australia since English skipper Douglas Jardine who unleashed Harold Larwood to stop run-machine Donald Bradman during the ‘Bodyline’ series.

"No captain since Douglas Jardine has stirred greater emotion in this country than Ranatunga," writes Ted Corbett, a correspondent for ‘The Hindu’ newspaper.

A Perth radio station had in fact asked its listeners to boo when Ranatunga took the field on Sunday, to turn their backs on his team and to clap the umpires all the way to the middle at the start of the match against Australia.

This was after Ranatunga was let off with a suspended six-match ban after being found guilty of improper conduct in the match against England at Adelaide.
