  • Both sides mum on 'dishonest practices' charge
    Evans tenders 'unqualified' apology to president
    The commercial dispute between the Government of Sri Lanka and Evans International, the U.S. company which contracted with Centrepoint Colombo Ltd. to reconstruct a large portion of Janadhipathi Mawatha destroyed by the Central Bank bomb has been resolved by Colombo agreeing to pay Evans an ex gratia payment of US $ 3.4 million (about Rs. 236 million) actual losses incurred by them, the foreign ministry said yesterday.

    Both the foreign ministry and the U.S. embassy in Colombo issued separate statements setting out the problem and welcoming its amicable settlement.

 

JAFFNA (Sri Lanka), March 6 - Forensic experts and geologists take soil samples of an area in northern Jaffna peninsula March 5, where authorities suspect there is a mass grave. A soldier sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a Tamil schoolgirl, said bodies of some 300 Tamils who "disappeared" after being arrested by government troops are buried in the area.
