CPC minister has narrow escape

Central Province Transport and Highways Minister Saliya Bandara Dissanayake had a narrow escape when an unidentified gunman opened fire at his vehicle on an estate road near Maskeliya on Friday night, police said.The Ministers driver Nimal Ariyasinghe (36) was hit by gun fire and was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday at the Kandy General Hospital.
Mr. Dissanayake had been returning to Kandy after attending a religious ceremony at the Norton Bridge Saman Devale when the incident took place around 8.30 p.m.

Body of infant eaten by dogs found

The decomposed body of an infant, about six days old, partially eaten by dogs, was found on the banks of the Uriyawa tank, by the Anamaduwa Police, following a complaint made to them by one B. M. Weerasinghe, who told the Police that his wife had seen a dog carrying what appeared to be the body of a baby.The DMO Anamaduwa, Dr. Anura Bandara, who examined the body, revealed that a hand, a leg and part of the face had been eaten by animals. The baby had died about 72 hours before his examination. It could have died of natural causes.
The police are now trying to trace the woman who had given birth to the child.
Meanwhile a farmer of Nawagaththegama in Anamaduwa, who was returning home on his cycle, was killed on the spot when he was attacked by an elephant. His backbone was broken.
The elephant had remained at the spot from that evening till the following noon.
Two fined for attempting to stop train
PANADURA: Panadura Magistrate Deepali Wijesundera imposed a fine of Rs. 2000 each on two accused who attempted to stop a train by force.
The accused were Nadeeka Alwis and Nilanka Alwis, two brothers of Railway Quarters, Ratmalana.
On the previous day, they have had toddy with another gang and tried to stop the train. Then the Railway workers had caught them and handed over to police.
Panadura police prosecuted.
