Four hundred buildings in Kandy identified for ‘conservation’

From Cyril Wimalasurendre in Kandy
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, under the Urban Development uthority law, has identified 400 buildings in the city of Kandy to be declared as ‘conserved buildings’ under the World Heritage City project.

UDA in consultation with the Kandy Municipal Council, has informed the owners and occupants of these buildings of this decision, and warned them against making alterations, additions, renovations or demolishing such buildings without the prior permission of the UDA and the Municipal Council.

UDA sources told "The Island" that the rules will be strictly adhered to, to prevent the defacing of the frontage of these old buildings in Kandy. The World Heritage city project is keen to achieve its objective of protecting the cultural heritage of the city of Kandy, the last Capital of the Sinhala kings and the seat of Buddhism.

The authorities will keep vigil to ensure that no unauthorised renovations or reconstruction to these buildings are effected.
