Complaint against PC for harassment of school girls and teachers

From Cyril Wimalasurendre
An ugly incident where a policeman had embarrassed a group of teenage schoolgirls and the female teachers accompanying them at Randenigala has been brought to the notice of DIG (Central Range) Sirisena Herath.

A group students and teachers from a leading Colombo school had visited Randenigala dam on an educational tour. Policemen manning one of the barriers had allowed them to proceed, but on the way back their vehicle had been stopped and the cop who was in charge had humiliated them. When they politely explained that they had been allowed entry by the police themselves and produced their identity cards, the infuriated policeman had used unparliamentary language coupled with an obscene gesticulation.

DIG Herath told the ‘Sunday Island’ that a veteran broadcaster had brought this incident to his notice, though no official complaint had been lodged.

He had ordered an immediate inquiry, but as there are several police barriers at Randenigala, the task of tracing the culprit was difficult. The DIG sought more information, particularly the location it took place, to identify and deal with the policeman involved.

Four elephants electrocuted

From Gamini Wijayaratne in Polonnaruwa
Four wild elephants were electrocuted by a damaged high tension power line at Meeyankulam in the Batticaloa district on Friday night, Wild Life Department sources said yesterday.

Punani and Meeyankulam areas are migratory zones of wild elephants moving between Somawathiya and Maduru Oya wild life reserves.

Assistant Director of Wild Life Polonnaruwa P. H. S. Fernando told the Sunday Island he would be sending a veterinary surgeon to conduct a post-mortem examination on the dead elephants.
