Father of six children attacked with bat, dies

Wattala Acting Magistrate Roland Anthony ordered to remand K. Sreemal (38) produced before him by the Pamunugama Police in connection with the death of Anthony Pius Ranathunga (55) a father of six children at Sedawatta, Pamunugama.
Anthony Pius an employee of a garment factory who was found fallen bleeding profusely from nose and head on a road at Sedawatta, in Pamunugama succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo North Hospital Ragama on Sept. 21.
Mrs. H. M. Chandranee (36) a sister-in-law of the deceased giving evidence at the magisterial inquiry held by Mrs. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena the Wattala Magistrate said that on Sept. 20 at around 9.30 p.m. she heard somebody screaming that Anthony had fallen in a pool of blood on this road. When she rushed to the spot in the company of several others she found Anthony bleeding profusely. As Lal, a neighbour of him was there she asked him as to what happened. Then Lal said that he attacked Anthony with a bat. Then she said she would inform Police. As Antony was in an unconscious state she did not talk to him. Little while later Anthony was removed to Pamunugama hospital in a three wheeler. As his condition worsened he was sent to Ragama hospital. At 2 a.m. on Tuesday 21st she heard the news that Anthony had died.
Dr. D. K. Wijewardena AJMO Ragama hospital who held the postmortem recorded that the death was due to cronic cerebral injuries caused by a blunt weapon.
Inspector Kamal de Silva OIC Pamunugama Police, with the assistance of Inspector W. A. Jayaratne, PS 9047 Ratnayake PS 15463 Samaraweera, PC 31051 Jayaratne and PC 38727 Edirisinghe are making further investigations.
