George VI - Half Cent

A definitive Ceylon decimal currency Half cent copper coin. Was demonetized when the Ceylon coinage orders from 1892 to 1919 were revoked on 1941 August 1st, effective 1941 September 1st.

Obverse : Crowned Head of George VI to left in low relief in the center with Engraver initials P.M. in relief on the truncation of the shoulder. Legend GEORGE VI KING AND EMPEROR OF INDIA broken by the crown, within dot circle along periphery with raised rim.
Reverse : A Talipot palm in the center with ½ සතය in Sinhala on left, •சதம் in Thamil on right, within inner circle. • CEYLON • HALF • CENT • above, and year below in annulus within dot circle along periphery with raised rim.

Mintage as in Royal Mint reports of 1937 and 1940

Of about 52 Million half cent coins minted with 17 dates from 1870 to 1940 about 17.4 Million remain unsurrended ether lost or among coin collectors.

The Half cent coin ceased to be legal tender in 1941 but is mentioned as Rs 0.09 Million within cash in circulation listed in 1950 Annual Report of the Central Bank and remained in error in that Statistical Table tabulated in a column till 1968 and as a footnote all the way till 2002 when it was pointed out by me to the then Superintendent of Currency.
