THE Central Bank of Sri Lanka will issue for circulation a commemorative coin in the denomination of Rs 1 to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
A Central Bank release said the coin has been minute to circulation standard in Cupro Nickel alloy and is round in shape with a diameter off 25.4 mm and with a milled edge. It weighs 7.13 grammes. The coin will be legal tender in Sri Lanka and will be in circulation in addition to the current Re. 1 coins in circulation. The new coin will be a liability of the Central Bank.
The diverse of the coin depicts the official 50th anniversary logo of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) with the word, UNICEF towards the left above the logo. The years 1946-1996 are depicted below the word, UNICEF. The word anniversary appears in Sinhala, Tamil and English at the bottom centre of the coin. The words ``United Nations Children's Fund'' in Sinhala and Tamil are depicted on either side of the apex along the periphery.
The design on the reverse of the coin is identical to the existing Re. 1 coin with re-dating to 1996.
The coins will be issued to the public through the Central Bank counters at the Ground Floor of the MICH Building, Bristol Street, Fort and also through the regional offices of the Central Bank at Anuradhapura and Matara.
