The Central Bank of Sri Lanka will issue a new design five rupee coin minted in nickel brass today the day when the 1999 Cricket World Cup competition begins.
This coin will mark Sri Lanka's victory at the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the 1999 tournament to be held in England.
The new five rupee coin will be round, with a diameter of 23.5mm and a weight 9.5 grams. The edge of the coin will carry the legend "CBSL". It will be identical in size and shape to the current five rupee coin. It will be legal tender and will circulate alongside the current issue.
The obverse of the coin depicts two cricketers - a batsman and a wicketkeeper in the centre. The words "1999 World Cup" and "May 14-June 20" appear above the figures. The legal tender value of the coin appears in Sinhala, Tamil and English and Braille, against the numeral five. The names of the participating countries - Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Kenya, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe appear along the periphery.
The reverse of the coin depicts an impression of the 1996 World Cup at the centre, together with the year 1996 and the words "World Cricket Champions" in Sinhala, Tamil and English. The words "Sri Lanka" appear on the periphery and the year of issue "1999" is depicted at the bottom.
A limited number of uncirculated five rupee coins will be available for coin collectors in a plastic case of ten coins each.
