50th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army Rupee One commemorative coin

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has issued a commemorative one rupee coin to mark the 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka Army.

The nickel plated steel coin is of exact size and weight of the current one rupee coin. It is round with a diameter of 25.40 mm and has a milled edge. It weighs 7.13 gms. The coin will be legal tender in Sri Lanka.
The obverse of the coin depicts the Armorial Ensign of the Sri Lanka Army in the centre. The years '1949 - 1999' are depicted below. The words 'Golden Jubilee' in Sinhala, Tamil and English appear around the periphery.

The reverse of the coin depicts an artist's impression of a soldier holding a child with his right hand and holding the peace dove in the left hand, signifying the Army's role in protecting the nation and maintaining peace, law and order. The words 'one rupee' in Sinhala, Tamil and English appear around the periphery. The year of issue '1999' is depicted at the bottom.

These commemorative coins have been minted in a limited edition in two conditions. One will be in a 'brilliant uncirculated' condition of 127,000 coins, which will be sold at Rs.150 per coin in an attractive plastic box. A special limited issue of 8,000 coins in 'frosted proof' condition will be sold at Rs. 400 per coin in an attractive velvet box. A Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom is also included.

These coins will be issued to the public at Currency Department counters at the MICH Building, Bristol Street, Colombo 01 from Monday, October 18, 1999.
