Silver Scheepjes-Schelling

A variety of the Schelling of the United Province of Zeeland, Netherlands having on the a ship (Scheep) sailing right and known as the Scheepjes-Schelling. First struck in 1676 in West Friesland it was minted in Zeeland from 1750 to 1793.

Obverse : Crowned Arms of Zeeland: Rampant lion (facing left) half inside the sea represented by 3 waved lines, divides value 6 ST (6 Stuivers). Legend MON:NOV.ARGEN.ORDIN:ZELAND·, along the periphery within dash circle. The abbreviated Latin expands to Moneta Nova Argenta Ordinum Zeelandia and translates as: "New Silver Money of Province of Zeelandia". Digits of Year of issue 1 7 6 8/7 divided by top of crown.
Reverse : Ship sailing right with 3 fully rigged masts with square sails. Latin Legend ITA RELINQVENDA UT ACCEPTA, ending with mint mark: tower (Middelburg Mint) Legend translates as: "[Freedom/Liberty] must be left in the same way as it has been received".

Codrington X§26 Schellings (iii) Scheepjes-Schellings, from united provinces of Geldeeland from 1706, Holland and West Friesland from 1673, Utrecht from 1753 and Zeeland from 1750 are found in Lanka.

The VF condition coin was scanned at 600 dpi and displayed at 250 dpi.
It was won in 2000 January on eBay from a dealer in USA.
